President Zelensky will call for security guarantees to prevent Ukraine being forced into an unfavourable peace deal by a future Trump administration when he visits the United States this week.
Zelensky is travelling to the United Nations General Assembly in New York and then to Washington to present a “victory plan” intended to press Russia into negotiations with Ukraine.
He said the plan needed the swift backing of President Biden and other western leaders so Ukraine could begin talks before the end of the year from a position of strength. “I think this is a historical mission,” Zelensky said. “Let’s do all this today, while all the officials who want the victory of Ukraine are in official positions.”
