The world’s oldest living person has passed away at the remarkable age of 116. Tomiko Itooka’s remarkable life came to an end on December 29 after spending a year as a Guinness World Records holder.

Itooka died in a nursing home in Ashiya, Hyogo Prefecture Japan, with local officials confirming her death on Saturday.

Known for her love of bananas and Calpis, a popular yogurt-flavoured drink in Japan, she cherished these simple pleasures throughout her extraordinary journey.

Ashiya’s 27-year-old local mayor Ryosuke Takashima said: “Ms Itooka gave us courage and hope through her long life. We thank her for it.”

Itooka was born on May 23, 1908, six years before the start of the World War One.

She became the oldest living person according to the Gerontology Research Group’s database when Spain’s Maria Branyas died at 117 last year. In response to her crown, Itooka modestly just said “thank you.”

Itooka had an extraordinary life. At just 20, she tied the knot and went on to become the proud matriarch of four children and five beloved grandchildren.

During the Second World War, she took the reins of her husband’s textile business. Tragically, he died back in 1979, and she decided to live a quiet life after that.

Across her life, she scaled Mount Ontake, Japan’s second highest volcano, twice.

Itooka’s 116th birthday was a festive affair featuring a big celebratory cake, a bouquet and a personal card from the town’s mayor.

To commemorate her incredible life, a private memorial service was held with her close family and friends.

Following Itooka’s death, the Gerontology Research Group has crowned Inah Canabarro Lucas as the oldest person in the world. At 116 years old, the Brazilian nun was born just 16 days after Itooka in 1908.
