Bananas are a popular kitchen staple: excellent on their own, in a fruit salad or smoothie, or used in baking. But according to one gardening expert, they are also great facilitators for plant growth.
An expert spoke exclusively to GB News about how banana peels can be used in the garden for beautiful plants.
Sam Marlow from Garden Buildings Direct said: “We all know that kitchen waste is great for compost but did you know that there are other uses in the garden for kitchen waste?
“Instead of tossing away banana peels, chop them up and bury them in the soil around your plants.

The gardening expert also shared how Britons can eliminate slugs in their gardens using beer.
The experts at Garden Organic said: “The slug is almost certainly the most hated pest in horticulture, causing widespread damage and sometimes complete crop failure.”
An experiment found that “beer traps are effective over a short distance as long as the contents are replaced regularly”.
The experts said: “The most important message was that slugs are attracted to beer, but they are not fussy about what type, be it lager or bitter.”
Speaking about the plant-boosting benefits of banana peels, gardening enthusiast Jeff from The Ripe Tomato Farms said that banana peels can benefit your garden in many ways.
The high quantities of potassium in banana peels can help plants sustain growth, increase root structure, improve drought tolerance, increase pest resistance and aid photosynthesis.
Banana peels can be chopped up and added to compost or placed at the bottom of pots and containers when potting new plants.
They can also be hardened and crushed using a pestle and mortar to be used as a powder fertiliser.
For a liquid fertiliser, banana peels can be submerged in water at room temperature for two weeks. Strain the peels and use the water on your plants.
