Works on stabilising Gateshead flyover completed as Metro services run again

Must read

The flyover, a 1960s-built arterial route, was closed two weeks ago after monitoring revealed concerns with a pillar’s structural integrity, prompting Gateshead Council to act swiftly to ensure public safety.

Both the flyover and the road below were closed to vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians, while Metro services, which run directly beneath the affected pillar, were suspended as a precaution.

Engineers have since installed temporary supports to address the immediate safety risks, with more permanent repairs set to begin in early 2025.

Gateshead Council Leader Martin Gannon confirmed that the structure has reached the end of its serviceable life.

Plans to secure funding for its demolition and the regeneration of the area are expected to move forward in the new year.

Gannon described the stabilisation work as a critical step in minimising disruption while safeguarding public safety.

The council is also considering whether parts of the flyover can be reopened temporarily, but Gannon stressed that continuing to repair the outdated structure would be more expensive in the long run than removing it entirely.

Residents are being urged to plan for ongoing traffic disruptions, as diversions around the flyover remain in place.

The two roundabouts beneath the structure, Park Lane and Five Bridges, are open, enabling traffic to flow east-west and access the Tyne Bridge and A184 Felling bypass.

However, motorists are encouraged to use alternative routes, such as the A1 Western Bypass, to ease congestion.

Despite the challenges, Gannon highlighted the opportunity to accelerate redevelopment plans for Gateshead town centre, calling the situation a chance to “speed up the revitalisation of our town.”

He thanked residents and commuters for their patience and urged continued cooperation as schools and workplaces reopen after the holiday season.
