A customer has shared her confusion and outrage after being asked to leave a 15 per cent tip when buying clothes online, making her wonder who would receive the extra cash
A customer has been left scratching her head after being asked to leave a 15 per cent tip when shopping online. The American woman was entering her address and credit card information into the online checkout when she noticed an ‘add tip’ section.
It reads: “Update with GTHIC’s innovative jewellery design and support the designer’s talent”. Following this, it prompts customers to either leave a five per cent tip at $1.56 (£1.23), a 10 per cent tip at $3.12 (£2.45), a 15 per cent tip at $4.68 (£3.60), or leave a custom amount.
Confused and outraged, she shared a screenshot on Reddit with the caption: “Now clothing websites want a tip? Get the f*** out of here.” While most users shared their shock over the request, others commented on how America’s tipping culture has ‘got out of hand’.
One user said: “I had this a few days ago when I ordered some shirts as well. I broke out laughing as I pressed the nope option. ‘A tip for the warehouse people picking your order’.” Another user added: “Cheeky me wonders what happens if you put a negative number?”
A third user said: “Lol, the audacity.” One more user added: “A fancy way to say we underpay and overwork our employees.” It comes after a man was asked to leave a 20 per cent tip at a self-checkout machine when buying two bottled drinks.
The machine provided him with four automated options – ‘No tip’, ’15 per cent’, ’18 per cent’ or 20 per cent’. But when reading over the options, he started to question who would receive the tip – believing he deserved it since he was the one carrying out the transaction.
On Reddit, he simply wrote: “I got an option to tip at the self-checkout lane.” Commenting on his post, one user said: “That self-checkout screen has three kids to feed!” Another user added: “A tip for whom? Myself?” A third user said: “Tipping culture is out of control now.” One more user added: “Wait…if I did the scanning and the putting things in bagging, shouldn’t I get a tip?”
