Wind powers record supply of electricity across Britain

A record amount of electricity was produced by wind turbines across Britain on Sunday night.

The 12,000 turbines on land and at sea were generating 22.2 gigawatts of capacity at 6.30pm, providing more than half of the country’s electricity supply. The new high broke a record of 21.8 GW set in December last year.

In the early hours of Monday, wind power was providing almost 70 per cent of the country’s electricity needs. The share was still more than half into Monday afternoon.

The boom marked a sharp reversal from last week, in which there were several days when wind output was low and electricity was overwhelmingly generated by gas.
