Djokovic accuses Wimbledon crowd of ‘disrespect’ after Rune victory

World No 1 Jannik Sinner takes on Daniil Medvedev in the match of the day at Wimbledon on Tuesday as the quarter-finals begin at the All England Club.

Sinner is first up on Centre Court against Russian fifth seed Medvedev while defending champion Carlos Alcaraz plays Queen’s winner Tommy Paul in the second match on Court 1.

In the women’s singles, Donna Vekic ended the run of qualifier Lulu Sun as the Croatian raced away with a 5-7 6-4 6-1 victory to reach her first Wimbledon semi-final. The world No 37 will face either Jasmine Paolini or Emma Navarro, who meet later on Centre Court.

On Monday, Novak Djokovic reached the quarter-finals of Wimbledon with a dominant display against Holger Rune on Centre Court on Monday evening before a furious speech accusing fans of being “disrespectful”.

Elena Rybakina produced a superb display earlier in the day before her opponent Anna Kalinskaya was forced to retire hurt. And there were tears for Elina Svitolina, with the Ukrainian left distraught after missile attacks on five cities, with the country’s largest children’s hospital in Kyiv hit.

Wimbledon 2024: Jannik Sinner 7-6, 4-6 6-7 6-2 1-3 Daniil Medvedev* – BREAK!

Medvedev is zoned in. He seems more focused on keeping the ball in play and setting up points. Sinner comes down the line but the Russian is expecting it and laces a lovely inside out forehand to the far corner to moe 0-30 ahead.

Jannik Sinner double faults and puts Medvedev three break points up.

The Italian saves the first one with an ace and his fastest serve of the match. He then dominates the next rally and smashes a winner down the line to save the second one.

Medvedev breaks! Sinner’s forehand goes into the net and that could prove costly.

Wimbledon 2024: *Carlos Alcaraz 5-7 4-3 Tommy Paul – BREAK!

A poor game from Paul and Alcaraz strikes ahead in the second set! Too many errors from the American there, and just what Alcaraz needed to get himself going in this match. It’s a blow for Paul, who was pushing for the double-break not long ago.

Wimbledon 2024: Jannik Sinner* 7-6, 4-6 6-7 6-2 1-2 Daniil Medvedev

Oh! A double fault and an unforced error from Daniil Medvedev brings Jannik Sinner back on level terms at 30-30 in the next game but the Italian can’t make use of it.

He pings a forehand too long and Medvedev lands his next first serve to hold.

Wimbledon 2024: Jannik Sinner 7-6, 4-6 6-7 6-2 1-1 Daniil Medvedev*

Medvedev squeezes into a 15-30 lead and challenges a call after Sinner sends down an ace. The hawkeye shows it landing in play and Sinner makes the game level.

He then serves to the backhand and forces Medvedev’s return into the net. During the next rally, the ball sits up beautifully for Medvedev who climbs on a forehand down the line. Deuce.

Just as easily as Medvedev did, Sinner closes out the game from deuce.

Wimbledon 2024: Carlos Alcaraz hits back in second set after scare

After the hammer blow of losing that opening set, Carlos Alcaraz understandably looked slightly dazed at the start of the second set. He double faulted to bring up two break points in his very first service game and then fired a routine forehand wide to gift-wrap and early break for Tommy Paul.

But if there was any danger of another set suddenly slipping away from him, that was immediately expelled as he refocused and immediately brought up three break points of his own on the Paul serve. The American saved the first two but netted on the third and we’re now back on serve at 2-2 as the defending champions tries to fight his way back into this quarter-final.

Wimbledon 2024: Jannik Sinner* 7-6, 4-6 6-7 6-2 0-1 Daniil Medvedev

Okay, a fifth and final set. Daniil Medvedev to serve. He opens up with a fault before getting drawn into a testing rally. A low backhand from the Russian skims over the net and Jannik Sinner punts his return into the tape.

Sinner takes the next point but a forehand cross court from Medvedev sends him back into the lead. An ace follows but Medvedev then goes long.

Sinner then forces the game to deuce with a great backhand down the line and a drop shot volley.

Medvedev closes out the game with two strong serves.

Wimbledon 2024: Tommy Paul wins marathon first set 7-5 against Carlos Alcaraz

It’s been a remarkable first set on Court 1 and, after one hour and 12 minutes, Tommy Paul breaks Carlos Alcaraz at the perfect time to triumph 7-5!

The standard of play has been incredible and almost every game has gone close but it’s the underdog who comes out on top after that marathon set. Alcaraz has been in this position before but, against an inspired opponent, he’ll need to come up with some answers pretty soon.

Jannik Sinner forces this match into a fifth set with a strong hold. His first serve was unbelievable in that set and Medvedev must be thinking that he can’t keep it up.

Sinner lets out a big sigh of relief. Don’t leave your seats just yet.

Wimbledon 2024: Jannik Sinner 7-6, 4-6 6-7 5-1 Daniil Medvedev*

Jannik Sinner is two breaks up now and should be able to secure the fourth set from this position. This has been a fine match and deserves to go down to a decider.

Bang, bang, bang, bang. Sinner wastes no time in securing the hold. He’s one game away from the set.
