Why wasn’t Mikel Oyarzabal’s Spain goal ruled out for offside and did VAR check it?

Must read

Uefa’s high-tech cameras proved that the referees were right to allow Spain’s winning goal to stand against England, despite many supporters complaining that Mikel Oyarzabal was offside.

To the naked eye, it appeared to television viewers that the Spain forward had moved beyond England defender John Stones as he attacked Marc Cucurella’s left-wing cross in the final moments of England’s 2-1 defeat in the European Championship final.

Followers of Premier League football might have expected a lengthy delay while officials examined the replays to determine whether Oyarzabal was offside, as is often the case in English domestic football.

But the on-field referees in Berlin were quickly advised to continue the match after the 86th-minute winner, with technology used in Germany for the first time showing that the right kneecap of Stones had played Oyarzabal onside by the tightest of margins.
