Why Luke Shaw was the only player to wear green bib in England training

Must read

England received a huge boost with Luke Shaw returning to training, but the colour of his bib has dialled things back slightly.

The Manchester United left back, who hasn’t played since February, returned to action at the Three Lions’ Euro 2024 base in Weimar.

The good news didn’t stop there either, with Manchester City’s John Stones also back in action just four days before England start their campaign against Serbia in Gelsenkirchen.

However, expectations that Shaw could feature against Serbia have been slightly tempered after it was revealed that his green bib was in fact a no contact bib.

That warning to his teammates in training suggests that the 28-year-old may need slightly more time to get up to speed after a long-term hamstring injury.

All eyes are still on Shaw, though, as he’s the only specialist left back in Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad, with Chelsea’s Ben Chilwell missing out through injury.

The United defender has starred for England at previous tournaments, even scoring in the last Euros final against Italy.

He hasn’t played since a 2-1 win over Luton in February, though, and it’s expected that Newcastle right back Kieran Trippier will shift to the left side to start the tournament.

The session was filled with plenty of positivity as all 26 players made training.

That includes Stones, who came off injured during a 1-0 defeat to Iceland, and Bukayo Saka who put some fitness concerns to one side by completing the whole session.
