Wayne Rooney confirmed he is leaving his role as a pundit for the BBC’s coverage of Euro 2024 to prepare for the new Championship season. The Plymouth Argyle head coach announced on BBC One tonight that he will be flying home on Thursday.
On the same day Argyle’s fixtures for the 2024/25 season were announced, Rooney told Gary Lineker live on air that he will be heading “straight down” to Plymouth when he returns. Following tonight’s goalless draw between Belgium and Ukraine, host Gary asked Rooney how he’s feeling about joining the Pilgrims.
Confirming that tonight was Rooney’s last appearance as a pundit for the Euros, Gary asked: “Wayne, its’ your last time here because you were gonna stay longer but you’ve got a job. When does it start?”

Wayne replied: “I fly home tomorrow. The lads are back in on the 3rd of July so I’ll be home and straight down to Plymouth.” Rooney was then asked about Argyle’s fixtures.
He answered: “Yeah the excitement was there again today. When you see the fixtures, you’re looking through the opening games, the Christmas schedule and stuff. Really Excited.”
Fellow pundit Alan Shearer couldn’t resist a dig as he said: “Wait till the pundits start criticising you!” Gary then concluded: “We wish you all the best Wayne.”
