Wayne Rooney ‘approached’ over surprise return to management

Must read

Wayne Rooney could be about to enter the world of management less than six months after being sacked by Birmingham.

It is reported that the 38-year-old, who only last 15 matches in the Midlands after his departure from DC United over the winter, has been approached for an interview by Plymouth.

The Telegraph state that he is among the candidates to take over Argyle following their narrow escape from relegation, and is in line after Paul Heckingbottom to be formally spoken too.

The former Sheffield United boss is said to have been interviewed earlier this week, whilst Rooney’s relationship with Plymouth director of football Neil Dewsnip has given him the chance to improve his managerial standing after a bruising spell at St Andrews.

Rooney was at Everton when Dewsnip was a coach in the academy and it is reported that the pair have kept a close relationship since. It would be his third managerial stint in England should he be successful.

The former Manchester United and England captain has already been confirmed as a pundit for BBC ahead of the European Championships this summer, but he has been open about aiming to return to the dugout.
