Wales claim two losing bonus points vs New Zealand in stirring opener

Must read

A stirring Wales U20s fightback fell just short but they did pick up two losing bonus points in a 41-34 defeat to New Zealand U20s in the opening round of the World Rugby U20 Championship.

Wales were trailing 41-20 with just 12 minutes to go but fought their way back into the game to claim two losing bonus points but it could have been so much more if they had just taken their chances. But there were plenty of positives for Wales to take out of this game with centre Louie Hennessey and No 8 Morgan Morse outstanding but New Zealand’s cutting edged proved to be the difference.

Wales go again against Spain U20s in midweek before facing defending champions France U20s and they will fancy their chances of getting out of the pool. New Zealand drew first blood when scrum-half Dylan Pledger intercepted his opposite number Ieuan Davies’ pass on halfway to run in unopposed for a try which Rico Simpson converted.

But Wales hit right back with Hennessey’s pass finding Aidan Boshoff on the wing who offloaded back inside for Huw Anderson who scored. Harri Wilde kicked a couple of three pointers but New Zealand were awarded a penalty try after Osian Thomas illegally sacked a driving lineout which also earned the second-row 10 minutes on the sidelines.

The Junior All Blacks were beginning to take control and a lovely angle from impressive centre Xavi Taele earnt them their fourth try. But Wales hit back on the stroke of half-time with a lovely floating pass from Wilde putting Hennessey over at the corner meaning they trailed 24-13 at the interval.

New Zealand drew first blood in the second-half when a long pass from Aki Tuivailala, which was clearly forward, Taele who touched down for his second try. Wales can feel aggrieved at the officiating for New Zealand’s fifth try with Vernon Basson clearly knocking the ball forward in front of the referee’s face. Instead of awarding Wales a scrum the referee choose to ignore it awarding New Zealand a penalty which resulted in Tai Cribb touching down off the back of a driving maul.

But to their credit Wales refused to throw in the towel and cut the deficit when Hennessey hit a superb angle for a stunning individual try. Whiffin’s side were temporarily reduced to 14 men when outstanding No 8 Morse got sent to the sin bin for a dangerous tackle.

Wales proceeded to lay siege to the New Zealand try line but kept letting them off the hook either through overthrown lineouts or sloppy handling errors. And New Zealand showed the difference between both sides when Xavier Tito-Harries scored at the corner out of nothing.

But still Wales kept fighting and a beautiful chip kick from Lucca Setaro got gathered by 17-year-old Steffan Emanuel who touched down for a bonus point try. And Wales left with try losing bonus points when Scarlets centre Macs Page showed his power to force his way over the line.

Here are the three players likely to play for Wales at senior level in the next two years?

Fitness boost

Wales U20s have been boosted by the return of captain Ryan Woodman who was missing during the Six Nations.

The powerful blindside is one of the best prospects in Welsh rugby and is seen by many as a future senior international star in the making. Woodman’s leadership will be of big benefit for Wales while he will form a potent back-row alongside Lucas de la Rua and Morgan Morse.

Richard Whiffin’s side had a difficult Six Nations campaign but ended it with an impressive victory over Italy U20s in Cardiff. Confidence is high within the Wales squad but they couldn’t have asked for a tougher opener than a clash with the Junior All Blacks.
