Aides close to the Hungarian prime minister said they were surprised how optimistic Mr Zelensky was about winning the war with Russia, something Mr Orban considers unlikely.
Hungarians confident
But there is belief amongst the Hungarians that their interventions have helped further peace talks.
Mr Zelensky’s chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, said Russia would be invited to a second international summit to discuss peace sometime later this year.
However, in a recent interview with Bloomberg, the Ukrainian president rejected the prospect of peace talks based on a ceasefire, saying Russia couldn’t be trusted to uphold the terms of the agreement.
“As for a ceasefire, I have been very clear: we are at war and we cannot talk about a ceasefire just like that,” Mr Zelensky told the financial news agency.
