Van der Vaart rips into Van Dijk as Liverpool star’s ‘lazy’ defending goes viral

Netherlands icon Rafael van der Vaart has ripped into Virgil van Dijk following the shock 3-2 defeat against Austria.

With France held to a stalemate with Poland, Holland could have topped the group should they have earned a least a point in Tuesday’s clash.

But they were second best against Ralf Rangnick’s men, with Liverpool skipper Van Dijk guilty for Austria’s winning goal.

The 32-year-old was caught lagging behind his defensive line, which saw Marcel Sabitzer onside as he raced clear on goal before smashing into the roof of the net.

That footage quickly went viral, with fans branding his defending ‘lazy’ on social media.

And Van der Vaart, who was part of the Holland squad that reached the 2010 World Cup final, took exception to Van Dijk’s post-match interview.

Speaking to Dutch TV channel NOS after the defeat, Van Dijk said: “It was a very bad match, in all respects.

“We started weakly, with the ball, but also in the duels. Then you are behind the times. It was just a bad evening.”

Before adding: “We have to do much better, that’s clear.”

Likening his comments to Holland’s display, Van der Vaart remarked: “We played the way Virgil van Dijk just talked!

“There has to be some venom in there because it was a shame today.

“We just had to watch a disgraceful performance!

” I would like to see that from a captain in his interviews. I want to see some passion! The way I’m talking now.”

He continued: “It is a very deserved defeat. The second half started a little better, and then you see that Austria is a good, but also a very normal team.

“You play a little well, and then you catch them immediately.

“It is also the absolute will. You come back and then you get those balls again. It is unbelievable, so bad.”

The stats make grim ready for Van Dijk, who failed to make a single tackle against Austria.

That is in addition to failing to win any of his ground duels, while boasting zero interceptions.

As well as losing four aerial duels, he also struggled with the ball at his feet – losing possession on five occasions.
