Haiti’s main airport was closed on Monday after a US passenger jet was hit by gunfire and gang violence surged in the country.
One member of the Spirit Airlines crew was injured as the aircraft attempted to land.
Photos shared on social media showed its cabin riddled with bullets, but all passengers escaped unharmed.
The plane, which had left the Florida city of Fort Lauderdale on Monday, aborted its landing in Port-au-Prince and diverted to the neighbouring Dominican Republic.

The US embassy said the plane had been hit amid “gang-led efforts to block travel to and from Port-au-Prince, which may include armed violence and disruptions to roads, ports and airports”.
