Until Dawn’s PS5 debut 28% weaker than Sony’s 2024 disaster Concord

While I can’t wait to start earning more of those Until Dawn trophies, it seems many players out there have no interest in the PS5 remaster of this classic PS4 horror. The Until Dawn PS5 player count is one of the worst debuts for a Sony game in quite some time. Regardless, we still think Until Dawn deserves a spot on our best horror games on PS5 list.

Until Dawn’s PS5 debut is worse than Concord and The Last of Us Part 2

Using a gameplay data sample from over 3.1 million active PSN accounts (courtesy of our partnership with GameInsights, which draws the majority of its PSN data from sources beyond TrueTrophies), we’ve been able to track the debut player count of every new PS5 and PS4 game released throughout the year.
Things are not looking good for Until Dawn, despite the original game being well-received on PS4, the PS5 remaster has failed to find an audience. The game has underperformed so badly, that even Sony’s refund-worthy Concord release had a better PS5 debut. Until Dawn’s PS5 debut saw 28.6% fewer PS5 players than Concord, which is shocking to see.

That means Until Dawn is getting fewer players than a game that underperformed so badly, Sony ultimately ripped it from all digital storefronts just two weeks after launch. To see the PS5 horror game flopping harder than that is honestly baffling, and things aren’t looking better with the game’s PC release.

The only thing that makes sense in my head as to why Until Dawn is underperforming is the game’s lack of promotion. Aside from a couple of trailers, I have barely seen Sony promote this remaster.

Perhaps the company believed that the game would have enough pull thanks to the original being beloved by many. Or, maybe Sony’s PS5 exclusivity deal with Konami for Silent Hill 2 (which also launched this week) got in the way. Either way, the remake has arrived with nary a whisper from its publisher.

To put the game’s performance in a wider perspective, Until Dawn’s PS5 debut player count was 95.5% smaller than Astro Bot’s. Astro Bot debut PS5 player count made it the sixth-biggest single-player PS5 game of 2024 so far, while Until Dawn falls well below the top ten.

Meanwhile, another PS5 remaster of a PS4 game has done a lot better this year than Until Dawn: The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered. The game remains the biggest single-player PS5 game of 2024 so far, with Until Dawn’s debut being weaker by 98.5%.

It’s worth pointing out that The Last Of Us Part 2‘s upgrade only costs $9.99/£9.99 to upgrade from the PS4 to the PS5 version. So, with Until Dawn retailing as a full-priced AAA game, it’s only natural that there is a huge difference in players between the two.

This goes to show that a remaster can indeed dominate the charts and see success. It’s just a crying shame Until Dawn hasn’t yet. However, the game could see a burst in numbers in the coming weeks. We will certainly be keeping an eye out.

Personally, I’m really disappointed that Until Dawn hasn’t had a bigger debut. I absolutely adore the original game and have been excited to jump into this one ever since we got that first trailer at the start of the year.

While Until Dawn does have a few flaws on PS5 that need ironing out — its frame rate being one of them — I do believe it deserves far more love than it is receiving right now. The fact its PS5 debut is worse than Concord‘s just doesn’t sit right with me.
