Ultion Nuki Achieves Prestigious BSI Kitemark For IoT Security

Must read

Over on The Ambient where I review a multitude of smart home gadgets, the Ultion Nuki was already a firm favorite… and now there’s even more reason to put your trust into the smart lock specialist.

Renowned for its high-security smart locks featuring the Brisant Secure 3 Star Plus cylinder and Sold Secure Diamond standard rating, Ultion Nuki has now added the prestigious British Standards Institution (BSI) Kitemark for the Internet of Things (IoT) to its list of accolades.

The BSI Kitemark was awarded following a series of exhaustive tests that assessed both the physical and digital security of Ultion Nuki locks.

These tests included resistance to electromagnetic interference, cyber-attacks, and data hacking.

The rigorous BSI procedures also involved meticulous production line inspections to ensure the locks were manufactured securely.

A critical aspect of the testing focused on electromagnetic interference, where Ultion Nuki locks demonstrated their ability to remain secure and unhackable even when subjected to intense radio waves and electromagnetic shocks.

Additionally, the software update process was put to the test, with attempts to load hacked firmware consistently thwarted by the lock’s robust system.

Another significant test involved depleting the locks’ batteries to confirm they remained secure when operating mechanically.

The accompanying Nuki app also underwent comprehensive testing to ensure its resilience against hacking attempts. The app successfully resisted various exploits, maintaining its coding integrity and ensuring user security.

Mechanically, Ultion Nuki locks were required to operate for 100,000 cycles, equivalent to seven uses per day for 39 years, proving their exceptional durability.

The locks also faced extreme temperature tests ranging from -20°C to +60°C with 95% relative humidity, ensuring they could withstand severe climatic conditions without compromising security.

Physical security tests included resistance to drilling, picking, bumping, and snapping.

Given that snapping is a common method used to breach Euro Cylinder locks, Ultion’s £5,000 security guarantee against such breaches underscores their confidence in the product.

The Ultion Nuki smart lock, of which there are now a couple of options, is the result of a collaboration between British security leader Ultion and Austrian tech brand Nuki.

They combine the advanced Nuki Smart Lock 3.0, which can be retrofitted onto existing doors, with Ultion’s high-quality door lock and internal handle.

Nick Dutton, CEO of Ultion, highlighted the importance of the BSI Kitemark, stating, “Achieving the BSI Kitemark for the Internet of Things was a significant investment, but it provides our customers with peace of mind, knowing their homes, belongings, and loved ones are protected. It validates that Ultion Nuki locks meet the highest standards for both digital and physical security.”

Ultion Nuki and Ultion Nuki Plus are available direct from Ultion, priced at £199 and £379 respectively.
