Several flights due to land at Bristol Airport have been rerouted following snowfall, with a spokesperson saying the decision was taken due to the “challenging weather”
Bristol Airport has suspended flights following heavy snowfall amid travel chaos.
Several flights due to land at Bristol Airport tonight (Saturday, January 4) have been rerouted following today’s snowfall. Since 8.30pm, four flights have been redirected to Birmingham and one to Cardiff. A 6.05pm flight to Paris has also been cancelled, as well as the 7.30pm flight to Edinburgh. Other arrivals scheduled for tonight at Bristol have also been called off.
A spokesperson for Bristol Airport said: “The Bristol Airport team are working hard on snow clearing but challenging weather means that flight operations have been suspended until later tonight. This will mainly impact inbound flights but any concerned customers are advised to contact their airline for more information.”
“Planes having trouble getting into Bristol Airport (BRS). Looks to be due to high winds and snow,” wrote one person on X.
For some people, the worst thing appeared to be the idea that some flights were being rerouted from their original destination. “Bit of a shock for passengers going to Spain and they get sent to Birmingham,” quipped someone.
Some people appeared to be disbelieving of the news: “Where’s our snow?” one person asked. “Still waiting,” another wrote. Another simply chimed: “How the **** did they get snow? It’s bucketing down here north of Dartmoor.”
These diversions occur amidst a yellow weather warning for snow in Bristol. The warning is in place until 11.59pm tomorrow and suggests there is “a chance of travel delays on roads with some stranded vehicles and passengers, along with delayed or cancelled rail and air travel”, according to the Met Office.
Britain is set to be smothered in as much as 12 inches of snow as biting Baltic weather relentlessly lashes the nation.
A spate of events across the country have been axed, and specialists are cautioning against hazardous road conditions and heightened mortality risks for the frail and elderly. A swathe of terrain encompassing most of the Midlands, swathes of Wales, and segments of northern England has been slapped with an amber snow and ice warning valid until midday Sunday.
Additionally, a focused snow alarm has been sounded for northern England, enveloping Leeds, Sheffield, and the Lake District, stretching right up until the witching hour on Sunday night. Forecasts suggest that a hefty blanket of up to 30cm could coat the warned regions, with lighter dustings of 3 to 7cm elsewhere.
Traffic delays and potential shutdowns of some roads are anticipated, leaving a risk of travellers being marooned. National Rail is urging passengers to thoroughly vet their “whole journey” prior to departure.
