The Dutch authorities have fined Uber a record £245 million for a “serious violation” of data protection rules over transfers of personal information about its European drivers to the United States.
The American ride-hailing company said it would appeal against the “completely unjustified’ penalty from the Dutch Data Protection Authority (DPA).
At issue is Uber’s handling of sensitive data about its drivers over a period of more than two years.
The DPA said that the company had collected individuals’ information including taxi licences, location data, identity documents and even, in some instances, medical and criminal data, and sent it to its servers at its US headquarters.
