Uber drivers get £5,000 to buy electric cars

The company conceded that it needed to introduce new incentives to encourage drivers to buy electric cars.

Uber said the grants and discounts meant drivers could save up to £22,000 on a new EV. The cost of a high-end Kia EV6, for example, would be cut from £56,470.00 to £34,311.27 while a cheaper Kia Niro EV 2 would fall from £37,520.00 to £20,193.53.

The company is also offering drivers free charging for three months and is funding the installation of chargers in the north-east London borough of Redbridge.

Andrew Brem, Uber’s UK general manager, said: “Now is the time to speed up on electrification, not slow down. We cannot reach our collective zero-emission goals without continued action from policymakers and investment across the industry.

“Uber drivers can be the catalyst for accelerating electrification across the transport sector but collaboration will be crucial to combat air pollution and work towards a more sustainable future.”

Data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders last month showed that the market share of EVs had declined based on a year ago. Many cars are being heavily discounted in order to meet government targets requiring 22pc of new cars to be zero emission.
