Two Chinese workers have died and several were injured in a massive explosion outside Pakistan’s biggest airport on Sunday night, just days before Islamabad is set to host a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).

The Chinese embassy in Pakistan said workers were killed in a targeted attack on a convoy carrying Chinese staff of the Port Qasim Electric Power Company (Private) Limited at around 11pm.

It said the total death toll was higher as there was also an unspecified number of Pakistani casualties.

The Chinese embassy condemned the blast as a “terrorist attack” and called for a thorough investigation to punish the perpetrators.

“The Chinese Embassy and Consulates General in Pakistan strongly condemn this terrorist attack (and) express deep condolences to the innocent victims of both countries,” the statement said.

A huge contingent of police and army was rushed to the scene after the blast was heard near the Karachi international airport.
