Travel trick can cut hundreds from the price of getting to Germany

Must read

Now the Euros have officially kicked off and fan fever is ramping up, many people will be wanting to travel to Germany to support their teams. In fact, new research by Skyscanner reveals a third of football fans said they would want to travel to Germany to follow the action.

While dedicated football fans are willing to spend an average of £1,500 to be in Berlin for the final if the Three Lions go all the way, and a quarter would drop everything to be in Germany, fluctuating flight prices means many fans could find themselves priced out of attending. However, there is a cheaper way to get in on the action.

Skyscanner has revealed the alternative cost-effective ways to get to the games for less.

England vs Serbia (16 June)

England vs Denmark (20 June)

England VS Slovenia (25 June)

With the average flight to get to England’s first game in Düsseldorf coming in at £454, fans can take these 3 alternative routes:

Fly from Manchester to Amsterdam and drive from there for £165 – over 3 and a half times cheaper than flying directly, which would set fans back £618.

Catch a flight from London to Luxembourg, hiring a car from there for just £120 – totalling a £278 saving on a direct flight.

Fly from London to Amsterdam, where fans can hire a car at a combined cost of just £133 at a third the cost of flying direct from London from £398.

Fans will be swallowing, on average, the eye-watering cost of £537 to reach Frankfurt for England’s second game, or they could take one of the following routes:

Catch a flight from Manchester to Luxembourg £173, and hire a car £79 for just £252, which is nearly 2 and a half times cheaper than a direct flight at £621.
Fly from Edinburgh to Amsterdam, where fans can hire a car at £282 – half the price of flying direct from Manchester and saving £280.

Catch a flight from London to Zurich (£151), driving to the stadium £72 from there for £223 saving over £200.

The average cost for a flight to England’s final group match in Cologne would be £362, alternatively supporters can take one of the following routes:

Fly from Manchester to Amsterdam (£120) and hire a car £48 for just £168, in comparison to the cost of a direct flight from £425 – that’s over 2 and a half times more expensive.
Fly from London to Rotterdam (£171) and hire a car to Cologne for just £267, pocketing a saving of £51 on a direct flight.
Catch a flight from London to Amsterdam (£116), where fans can hire a car for £48 a total cost of £164 making it nearly half the price of flying direct (£318).

Laura Lindsay at Skyscanner said: “As the Euros kick off, we know many people will be following the action and wanting to travel to Germany. Whether you are planning a midsummer’s dream trip to support your team or just want to be there to soak up the atmosphere, there are still ways for footie fans to get on the road and not miss out. But shopping around and comparing your options has never been more important. For savvy fans, flying to somewhere close to Germany instead of direct and picking up cheap car hire to drive to your destination will result in savings. It also means you can explore when you’re there and save on accommodation by staying in a different location. Splitting the cost of car hire with a bunch of mates will save you even more. On Skyscanner’s car hire, you can search for 7 seaters and vans to split the costs even further! So whether driving into Germany from a neighbouring country, or even from the UK – the savings will have football fans cheering all the way to the final.”
