Travel chaos as trespassers block railway between Durham and Darlington

All lines have been blocked between Darlington and Newcastle train stations this afternoon (Wednesday, July 10) following a “trespass incident.”

Routes across the country are affected, as all lines are currently blocked on the East Coast main line, after trespassers on the railway between Darlington and Newcastle earlier today.

Trains running between these stations may be cancelled, delayed by up to 40 minutes or revised.

Disruption is expected to persist throughout the afternoon and could affect the evening rush hour.

Routes currently affected by the line closures are:

  • CrossCountry between Penzance / Plymouth / Bristol Temple Meads and Edinburgh, and between Plymouth and Aberdeen

  • LNER between London Kings Cross and Glasgow Central / Edinburgh / Stirling / Abderdeen / Inverness

  • Lumo between London Kings Cross and Edinburgh

  • TransPennine Express between Liverpool Lime Street and Newcastle

National Rail has advised customers to look at that they may be able to use tickets for other trains, depending on their rail company.

  • CrossCountry You may use your ticket on the following services to complete your journey:

  • Transpennine Express and Northern via any reasonable route

  • LNER between York and Edinburgh (please note, LNER are also affected by this disruption).

LNER You may use your ticket on the following services to complete your journey:

  • Avanti West Coast between London Euston and Edinburgh

  • TransPennine Express between York and Newcastle

  • CrossCountry between York and Newcastle / Edinburgh

  • Rail replacement buses are in place between York and Newcastle / Edinburgh.

TransPennine Express = Rail Replacement transport has been requested to operate at Newcastle, Darlington and Durham.

When lines reopened you may use your ticket on CrossCountry and LNER services between Newcastle and York.
