Trains cancelled at busy London stations after rail infrastructure damaged

Trains are delayed at some busy London National Rail stations this morning (Monday, July 15). Part of the rail infrastructure has been damaged.

Overhead wires were damaged between London Euston, Clapham Junction and Watford Junction, meaning trains running between these stations will be delayed by up to 30 minutes or cancelled.




Disruption is expected until 12pm, National Rail has said.

To avoid disruption, you can use their real-time journey planner and work out a route around the cancellations.


Tickets will be accepted for no extra cost on the following alternatives:

  • Southern services between East Croydon, Clapham Junction and London Victoria

  • London Underground on any reasonable route

  • London Buses between Watford Junction and Clapham Junction

  • London Overground between Watford Junction and London Euston

  • West Midlands Railway between Watford Junction and London Euston

  • London Overground between London Euston and Watford Junction (if they are not affected by this disruption).

  • London Underground Metropolitan Line between London Kings Cross / London St Pancras International – Euston Square – Baker Street – Chesham – Rickmansworth – Watford Tube – Amersham.

  • Arriva bus route 321 between Watford Junction – St Albans Abbey

Passengers are eligible for compensation for service delays so make sure to keep your tickets, National Rail advises.

Delays set to last 45 minutes

Delays are due to last longer as a dewirement at Watford Junction has meant trains are unable to run between Watford Junction, Clapham Junction and London Euston properly. Delays were expected to last up to 30 minutes but now National Rail has said there they can last up to 45 minutes and some services can be cancelled.

Compensation

You may be entitled to compensation if your journey is delayed today. National Rail advises passengers to keep their train tickets and make a note of their journeys, as both will be required to support any claim.

Delays due to ‘dewirement’ at Watford Junction

National Rail said the delays are due to a dewirement in the Watford Junction area. This means that trains are unable to run on the route between Clapham Junction and Watford Junction until further notice. Network Rail response teams are on site and further will be provided once available.

National Rail has just listed several intercity Avanti West Coast services that have been affected by delays (seen below)

To get around the cancellations and delays, passenger tickets will be accepted at no extra cost on CrossCountry services between Stafford and Manchester Piccadilly.

Avanti West Coast between London Euston and Birmingham New Street / Wolverhampton / Chester / Holyhead / Liverpool Lime Street / Manchester Piccadilly / Blackpool North / Lancaster / Glasgow Central / Edinburgh

London Northwestern Railway between London Euston and Tring / Bletchley / Milton Keyes Central / Northampton / Rugby / Coventry / Birmingham New Street / Crewe, and between Watford Junction and St Albans Abbey

Southern between East Croydon / Selhurst / Clapham Junction and Watford Junction

Alternative routes for passengers between Euston and Watford Junction have been arranged by National Rail. This route is usually covered by London Northwestern services

Tickets will be accepted for no extra cost on the following alternatives:

  • London Overground between London Euston and Watford Junction (if they are not affected by this disruption).

  • London Underground Metropolitan Line between London Kings Cross / London St Pancras International – Euston Square – Baker Street – Chesham – Rickmansworth – Watford Tube – Amersham.

  • Arriva bus route 321 between Watford Junction – St Albans Abbey

Rail replacement buses are running between Watford Junction and St Albans Abbey.

Alternate routes for passengers between Clapham Junction and Watford Junction have been laid out by National Rail. These are usually Southern services and trains between East Croydon and Clapham Junction have been affected with cancellations too.

For these Southern Rail customers affected by the disruption, their tickets will be accepted for no extra cost on the following alternatives:

  • London Underground on any reasonable route

  • London Buses between Watford Junction and Clapham Junction

  • London Overground between Watford Junction and London Euston
