Disruption has affected Avanti West Coast and any services with trains down south from Glasgow axed or several delayed.

Queues snaked around the outside of the station as many travellers awaited an update from the railway provider Avanti.

Avanti said the disruptions are due to damage to the overhead electric wires between Lockerbie and Motherwell meaning fewer trains are able to run on the line.

The train operator added: “Train services running through these stations may be cancelled, delayed, or diverted. Please check your journey before you travel.”

Trains running from 8am this morning were delayed for over five hours with multiple services to Carlisle, Newcastle, Birmingham, Manchester and London cancelled.

Disruptions are expected to last until at least 6pm.

But those currently trying to travel down south were left fuming by the delays.

One tweeted: “Why are there no staff at Glasgow Central informing everyone about whats going on with the delays.

“The queue for the train to London euston is out the station entrance.”

Another wrote: “The 9.21am Manchester Piccadilly service to Glasgow Central has terminated at Carstairs.
