Traffic congestion in London was worse than any other city in Europe in 2024, according to transport analytics company Inrix.
It found that drivers in London spent 101 hours in traffic last year at an average cost of £942 individually or £3.85bn in total.
This compares to a UK average of 62 hours spent in traffic, with Bristol (65 hours) the second most congested city and Leeds (60 hours) third.
Bob Pishue, Inrix transportation analyst and author of the report, said:
“While the UK did see a slight increase in congestion again, overall congestion has remained steady. Roadworks in key corridors such as M25 Wisely interchange caused considerable traffic on a main artery into the capital. Interestingly it was cities outside of the capital that saw the greatest increase in congestion with Manchester seeing a large increase, up 13%. While London only had a modest increase in time lost, it still represented half of the entire country’s delay.”
Istanbul was found to be the most congested city in the world, ahead of Paris and Dublin, with London ranked in fifth place.
