Alan Hutton has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur could be making a surprising move for Everton center-back Jarrad Branthwaite this summer. Hutton, a former Spurs right-back, shared that his sources indicate the North London club is keen on securing the talented defender.
Branthwaite’s standout performances for Everton last season have caught the attention of several top clubs. The 21-year-old was a key player for the Toffees, demonstrating his potential to become a regular starter for England in the future. Despite not making the final 26-man England squad for the Euros, his consistent displays have solidified his reputation as one of the country’s brightest defensive talents.
Reports have circulated over the past few months suggesting that Everton are preparing for bids from big clubs. Both Manchester United and Tottenham have been linked with the young defender, with the Daily Mail reporting their interest. However, it seems Manchester United’s pursuit might be faltering. According to Sky Sports journalist Dharmesh Sheth, the Red Devils had a £35m offer, plus £8m in add-ons, rejected by Everton, leading them to potentially abandon their chase.
With Manchester United seemingly out of the picture, Hutton believes Tottenham could swoop in. Speaking to Football Insider, he noted, “I feel at times -Tottenham- have been light in that sense, actually across the back four. When you look at their starting back line, if any of them get injured or go missing for a good length of time, the players that come in aren’t quite up to the standard.”

Hutton went on to emphasize Branthwaite’s potential: “To have someone in the door with that potential who could be a regular starter for England moving forward, that could be a great deal. He did well last season, and there are talks Romero could be on the move, so there are a few things in the pipeline that might lead towards them going for someone like Branthwaite, and him filling that void at center-half. I have heard there could be a hijack there, from people I speak to at the club.”
The prospect of bringing in a young, high-potential defender like Branthwaite is undoubtedly exciting for Spurs fans. However, the financial aspect of the deal remains a significant hurdle. Given Tottenham’s other priorities in the transfer market, spending over £50m or £60m on a center-back might not be feasible.
Despite the potential stumbling blocks, the idea of Branthwaite donning a Spurs jersey next season remains an intriguing possibility. His arrival could provide the defensive solidity and future promise that Tottenham needs to strengthen their backline.
