Tom Holland is hanging up his Spider-Man after reportedly securing a lead role in Christopher Nolan’s next movie – and fans are beside themselves at the news.
The Marvel actor, 28, has faced criticism from fans online after he confirmed he would be returning for a fourth Spider-Man movie – despite fan hopes he might finally be leaving the MCU behind.
His career blew up when he appeared in the 2012 drama The Impossible opposite Naomi Watts and since then he has become known first and foremost as the superhero, Spider-Man.
Although the actor has switched things up as Romeo in a West End adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and starred in Apple TV+’s The Crowded Room, there has been an insatiable thirst for him to appear in more high-brow projects.
And everyone’s prayers might just have been answered.
The British actor is set to play the lead role in Oscar-winning filmmaker Christopher’s next movie opposite Matt Damon, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
The plot details for the 2026 Universal Pictures film are still under wraps, with sources saying it’s ‘not the present day’.
But an industry insider has told Gizmodo that the project is rumoured to be a vampire movie set in the 1920s. Shooting is said to start in early 2025.
Considering the Oppenheimer director’s last movie resulted in an Oscars sweep, including a coveted statuette for main star Cillian Murphy, there is plenty of chatter that this might be the perfect next move for Tom.
‘Tom Holland’s agent… you finally did it you crazy son of a b***h,’ @nicholaspas5 wrote on X.
‘All that talk about Tom Holland’s career and now he’s starring in the next Nolan film AND continuing Spider-Man. you hating b*****s will never win,’ @problemsthots echoed.
‘All these losers being like “no one cares about Tom Holland anymore”, “he is going to be unemployed forever” look who got the last laugh!!!!’ @dayasbrina posted.
‘Really like this. Always said that I think Tom Holland has the potential to be very very good under the right direction!’ @sethsfilm review shared.
Another user, @_jasonleino added: ‘Been saying this for a while now but there is a genuine dramatic side and untapped potential with Tom Holland as an actor.
‘He’s been type cast so far in his career and I think under the hands of an immensely talented director like Mr Nolan is, people are going to wake up and see.’
‘Can’t believe it took his agent this long but man is this Holland guy gonna have a massive performance boost under Nolan. HYPE HYPE HYPE,’ @aryan_000 celebrated.
Time will tell exactly what to expect from Tom’s new role, but for now, the star has given an update on Spider-Man 4.
In a recent podcast interview, he shared his excitement at the script, which is still in the early stages. He stars opposite girlfriend Zendaya who plays Peter Parker’s love interest MJ.
‘We have a creative and a pitch and a draft which is excellent. It needs work but the writers are doing a great job and I read it three weeks ago and it really lit a fire in me,’ he told the Rich Roll podcast, per Deadline.
He continued: ‘Zendaya and I sat down and read it together and we at times were like bouncing around the living room.
‘Like this is a real movie worthy of the fans’ respect, but there [are] a few things we need to figure out before we can get that really going. But it’s exciting and I’m really, really excited about it.’
In the same interview, Tom shared that Tony Stark actor Robert Dowrey Jr. stood up for him on set during his Spider-Man debut in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War.
According to Tom, his lengthy scene with the MCU star was heavily cut down on set before Robert foot down and insisted they shoot the full thing.
He added: ‘They used all of it. I owe that to him. That’s really cool. I’d love to one day do that…If I’m lucky to bring Miles Morales into the MCU, I’d love to do for a young kid what Downey did for me.’
The Metro has reached out to Tom Holland’s representative and Universal Pictures for comment.
