ForbesToday’s NYT ‘Connections’ Hints And Answers For Thursday, July 18

Hey, folks! The weekend’s right around the corner, so I hope you’ve got some exciting plans lined up. My favorite film festival just got underway, so I’ll try to catch a movie or two there this weekend. I’ve got so much to catch up on at the regular cinema too! Bonus: most movie theaters have AC, making them the perfect summer hangout spot for yours truly.

Anyway, today’s NYT Connections hints and answers are coming right up.

How To Play Connections

In Connections, you’re presented with a grid of 16 words. Your task is to arrange them into four groups of four by figuring out the links between them. The groups could be things like horror movie franchises, a type of verb or rappers.

There’s only one solution for each puzzle, and you’ll need to be careful when it comes to words that might fit into more than one category. You can shuffle the words to perhaps help you see links between them.

Each group is color coded. The yellow group is usually the easiest to figure out, blue and green fall in the middle, and the purple group is typically the hardest one to deduce. The purple group often involves wordplay, so bear that in mind.

Select four words you think go together and press Submit. If you make a guess and you’re incorrect, you’ll lose a life. If you’re close to having a correct group, you might see a message telling you that you’re one word away from getting it right, but you’ll still need to figure out which one to swap.

If you make four mistakes, it’s game over. Let’s make sure that doesn’t happen with the help of some hints, and, if you’re really struggling, today’s Connections answers.

What Are Today’s Connections Answers?

Spoiler alert! Don’t scroll any further down the page until you’re ready to find out today’s Connections answers.

This is your final warning!

Today’s Connections answers are…

  • Yellow group — romantic partner (FLAME, LOVER, STEADY, SWEETHEART)
  • Green group — insult (BURN, DIG, JAB, SLIGHT)
  • Blue group — gas pump options (DIESEL, PLUS, PREMIUM, REGULAR)
  • Purple group — ____ table (COFFEE, PERIODIC, POOL, WATER)

No perfect game today, but I’m up to 12 straight wins. I have my personal record of 32 in my sights.

LOVER, SWEETHEART and FLAME felt like a red herring since I didn’t see what would go with them. STEADY didn’t quite make sense to me. So, I turned my attention elsewhere and found the blues, thanks to DIESEL and REGULAR. The greens were next, but I erred by including FLAME instead of SLIGHT.

Again, I wasn’t incredibly sure about the yellows. I didn’t figure out the purple connection either, but I figured I might as well try those remaining words just in case they formed a group. Lo and behold, they did, leaving me with the yellows for the win.

That’s all there is to it for today’s Connections clues and answers. Be sure to check my blog for hints and the solution for Saturday’s game if you need them.

P.S. The green group reminded me just how much I love a good roast. I also love a good bad roast, an art that Norm Macdonald absolutely nailed. With a string of intentionally terrible jokes and genuinely touching comments about the roast’s target, Bob Saget, Macdonald is truly brilliant in this clip. Seeing some of the other comedians slowly cotton onto what he’s doing is great too.
