Thousands protest against mass tourism in Mallorca

Must read

Street protests against mass tourism erupted on the Spanish holiday islands of Mallorca and Ibiza at the weekend as thousands of demonstrators complained about the social and environmental costs inflicted on locals.

The right to affordable housing is being undermined by AirBnb-style rentals, scarce water is being used to fill swimming pools and roads are congested with holidaymakers’ cars, protesters complained.

Frustration with the behaviour of some British holidaymakers was indicated by the sight on placards of the term guiri that is used to describe northern European tourists such as Britons who come to party in playground resorts such as Magaluf.

Hardline demonstrators are proposing to blockade Palma airport with cars and hold mass protest outside hotels and on holiday beaches.
