The Smiths not reforming : Morrissey agreed to “lucrative” Smiths 2025 reunion tour offer – Johnny not interested
In this week of a big reformation there seems to have been another mooted attempt to pull another Manchester band back together.
In a city littered with broken core duos that drive legendary Mancunian bands there are many options to choose for the ambitious promoter. The Smiths, though, seemed to have been frozen into eternal history and a very unlikely band to reform but it turns out that Morriseey would have been up for it. Maybe this would not have been the best week to announce it even if they had managed to agree – Oasis have filled every available niche in the pop culture discussion with what looks like being the biggest selling UK tour ever. Timing is everything and that’s if you can get everyone to agree to do it.
Big American promoters AEG made the big bucks offers for what would have been a huge tour as the band have grown in stature since they were together. Calls were made, faxes whirred and people spoke to people and the singer agreed but Johnny Marr ruled himself out and would it even be The Smiths without the late and great Andy Rourke?
This perhaps led to the story a couple of days ago that resulted in Johnny posting an answer on twitter (never X!) to a fan’s question but this statement from the former singer underlines the fact that there actually was something going on.

In June 2024 AEG Entertainment Group made a lucrative offer to both Morrissey and Marr to tour worldwide as ‘The Smiths’ throughout 2025.
Morrissey said Yes to the offer; Marr ignored the offer.
Morrissey undertakes a largely sold out tour of the USA in November.
Marr continues to tour as a special guest to New Order.
