‘The Gentlemen’ Renewed For Season 2 By Netflix

Must read

Netflix has renewed Guy Ritchie’s series The Gentlemen for a second season. Stars Theo James, Kaya Scodelario and Daniel Ings will be back to reprise their roles for the eight-episode second installment of the hit series, created by Ritchie based on his movie and produced by Miramax Television. Ritchie, who earned an Emmy nomination for his directing work in Season 1, will return to direct. He is writing again with Matthew Read.

Commissioned by Netflix UK, The Gentlemen was an instant breakout when it was released on March 7, spending 10 weeks in the Top 10 for English-language series, the first three at #1.

Talks about another season kicked off right away, with James closing a deal to return in June.

Back in April, at Deadline’s Contenders Television, he explained why a renewal for the series was not straight-forward.

“It wasn’t genuinely discussed,” he said about a potential second season. “I think it would be a wrangling process with all of us and Guy. But also, I think with a show like this, if you’re going to do more, you need to come up with a really interesting concept for Season 2. Because as much as we enjoyed it and as fun as it was, it needs narrative drive.”

Set in the world of Ritchie’s 2019 Miramax film of the same name, the series’ first season centered on Eddie Horniman (James) who unexpectedly inherits his father’s sizeable country estate – only to discover it’s part of a cannabis empire. Moreover, a host of unsavory characters from Britain’s criminal underworld want a piece of the operation. Determined to extricate his family from their clutches, Eddie tries to play the gangsters at their own game. However, as he gets sucked into the world of criminality, he begins to find a taste for it, with an unexpected ally found in the sophisticated yet ruthless Susie Glass (Scodelario.)

UK’s Moonage Pictures is producing for Netflix and Miramax Television, with Ritchie; Will Gould, Read and Frith Tiplady executive producing for Moonage Pictures; Helwig for Miramax Television. Ivan Atkinson also executive produces.

Speaking with Deadline at the launch of Season 1, Helwig indicated that in success, The Gentlemen series could “spawn some kind of a universe, a Guy Ritchie world,” that could potentially lead to another movie.

Filming on Season 2 is set to begin next year.
