The bizarre household staple that could be crippling your Wi-Fi signal

Must read

Torturously bad Wi-Fi connections frustrate Brits the length and breadth of the country.

But there are hints and tricks you can employ to boost how quickly you can access your favourite apps and websites.

To help in your mission for super secure Wi-Fi Trevor Cooke, a privacy expert at Earthweb, discusses the top four surprising items that could be killing your signal.

Trevor said: “By identifying and addressing these common sources of interference, you can significantly improve your WiFi performance and enjoy a faster, more reliable internet connection.”

Below are four common reasons for sluggish internet access – with some more surprising than others, including a microwave oven!

1. Microwave Ovens

Microwave ovens operate on the same 2.4 GHz frequency as many Wi-Fi networks.

When in use, they can cause significant interference, leading to slower speeds or temporary disconnections.

Trevor said: “To reduce this interference, place your router away from the kitchen and any microwave ovens.”

Additionally, if your router supports it, use the 5 GHz band for your Wi-Fi network, which is less prone to microwave interference.

2. Bluetooth Devices

Bluetooth devices, such as wireless headphones, speakers and keyboards, also use the 2.4 GHz frequency, potentially causing Wi-Fi signal disruption.

To address this, limit the use of Bluetooth devices near your router or switch to the 5 GHz band for your Wi-Fi network if possible.

3. Thick Walls

Trevor said: “The physical structure of your home can significantly impact Wi-Fi performance.”

Thick walls – especially those made of concrete or brick – can obstruct and weaken Wi-Fi signals. Consider using Wi-Fi extenders or mesh networks to boost the signal in areas with thick walls.

4. Electronic Devices (e.g., Baby Monitors)

Other electronic devices, such as baby monitors, can interfere with Wi-Fi signals by creating radio frequency interference.

Investing in newer electronic devices designed to minimise interference with Wi-Fi signals can also improve your connection.

Trevor’s Additional Tips to Improve WiFi Performance

Ensure your router’s firmware is up-to-date to benefit from the latest performance improvements and security updates.

Switch to a less crowded Wi-Fi channel to reduce interference from neighbouring networks.

And for devices that require a stable and high-speed connection, consider using an Ethernet cable instead of relying on Wi-Fi.
