Ariana Grande in Vintage Givenchy Couture
After nearly a year of pink, puffy, sparkly Glinda cosplay on the publicity tour, the Wicked star and Best Supporting Actress nominee finally left it all behind her so she can seemingly launch into her next style obsession (if not next role): Audrey Hepburn. It’s a beautiful design to which she’s extremely well-suited, but we have to admit that the styling gets a little too precious for us and the color doesn’t suit her at all.
Cynthia Erivo in Louis Vuitton
Like her Wicked co-star, Cynthia opted to leave the more literal Elphaba styles behind her after sporting dozens on the promotion trail and celebrate her Best Actress nomination with a more modern, less ostentatiously witchy approach. It’s a refreshing change for her and we really like the print, but the bodice has a sort of casual feel that doesn’t marry well with the architectural quality of the skirt. It’s all interesting, but a little awkward to our eyes.
Elle Fanning in Pierre Balmain
The A Complete Unknown star has a longstanding love of mid-century haute couture, as well as an admirable ability to work it like an old school Parisian couture model, so it was no surprise at all to see her show up in a reproduction of a classic 1953 Balmain design. But along with her love of vintage couture, she also has a long habit of sporting colors that tend to wash her out. We love the silhouette and the leopard print, but that’s entirely too much beige for a pale blonde to attempt at once. This would have been stunning on her in black.
Anna Sawai in Dior Couture
We feel a little guilty saying it, because she’s objectively beautiful here, but we’re just not feeling the minimalist Dior gown sported by the Shōgun star and Best Supporting Actress in a Television Drama nominee. She favors these sorts of minimalist styles and we can’t really argue against the results, but we feel like she’d be so much better off in more dramatic or even trendier designs than this. It always feels too safe to us.
Zendaya in Louis Vuitton
She’s the reigning queen of making a statement on the red carpet, so when the star of Challengers and Best Actress in a Motion Picture nominee showed up sporting a diamond ring on her left hand, you can rest assured her mission to get tongues wagging was accomplished once again. Putting aside the possibility of becoming Mrs. Spider-Man, the entire look is serving classic Hollywood glam flawlessly (better than anyone else who tried it tonight) in an eye-popping color, with jaw-dropping jewels. A hundred Golden Age screen sirens are looking down from heaven and saying “Attagirl.”
Jessica Gunning in Rodarte
There’s nothing we love seeing more than an actress who may not necessarily be well-served by the fashion world overcome the obstacles, navigate the treacherous, and really come into her own on the red carpet. The Baby Reindeer star and Best Female Supporting Actor winner not only looks spectacular, she looks the best she ever has on a red carpet. The color, fit, and proportions serve her beautifully.
Jeremy Strong in Loro Piana
The star of The Apprentice never makes the expected choice. While we can’t quite bring ourselves to fully support the wearing of bucket hats to any awards show that isn’t the VMAs, we have to admit, we are utterly delighted by this look. Sure, he could have worn a standard tuxedo, but why do that when you can come dressed like Ali G?
Pamela Anderson in Oscar de la Renta
The star of The Last Showgirl and nominee for Best Actress in a Motion Picture has been joyfully navigating her rise in stature after years of being sidelined by the industry, but she refuses to play entirely by the rules, opting to hit every major red carpet sporting a clean face and casual hair, seemingly an act of defiance after years of being objectified and mocked. It’s not easy to marry formal styles with casual styling, but she’s at her best when she keeps the look dark and severely chic, as she does here
Adam Brody in Prada
It takes a lot for us to sit up and take notice of a guy in a tux on a red carpet but the star of Nobody Wants This and Best Actor nominee served up two things we love to see on guys in formalwear: a unique, eye-catching color, and a pair of fresh-from-the-box shoes with a hefty silhouette. It’s pure Your Boyfriend style, which couldn’t be a better choice for him at this moment. We just wish he’d shaved.
Kathryn Hahn in Altuzarra
The Agatha All Along star and Best Actress in a Comedy series nominee is always at her best when she’s working a boho style with a witchy undertone, as she’s doing here. While it does tend to strike us as a little casual for an event like the Globes, we think more stars should consider separates over gowns if they can find an outfit worth the risk. We would have liked more of an attempt to lend a little glamour in the styling, but the style and the color combination look great on her.
Anya Taylor-Joy in Vintage Dior
It’s giving classic Gwyneth Paltrow. The star of Furiosa usually favors more extreme styles than this, but we liked the change of pace. She can often give the impression that she’s trying a little too hard, so this feels like her loosening up a little. Having said that, we think the hair is severe, the necklace is too focus-pulling, and the wrap a little on the mumsy side. Keep trying to not try so hard, ATJ.
Nicole Kidman in Balenciaga
The Babygirl star and Best Actress nominee worked her style sweet spot: exuberant glamour meeting sexy elegance. The hair is giving ‘60s sex kitten and the gown is serving body in that demurely hot way that only she seems capable of managing. We love the sparkle and sense of lightness in the look, but if we’re being honest, the silver washes her out a little.
Miley Cyrus in Celine
While she may not be sporting the level of retro glamour of some of her contemporaries, there’s still something of a throwback feel to this look which reminds us of the confident sexiness of ’70s superstars like Cher or Jane Fonda. It’s not the trendiest or most eye-popping look of the night, but the injection of rocker chic bravado and hotness was refreshing.
Timothée Chalamet in Tom Ford
We have to resist the urge to suggest that the star of A Complete Unknown and Best Actor nominee has lost his style mojo. While it’s true that he’s nowhere near as adventurous in his choices as we was just a year ago when he was promoting Wonka and Dune 2, we think this turn toward more sedate, more dude-oriented fashion makes sense. He’s serving a modern spin on Bob Dylan cosplay. We get it, but we don’t actually think it looks all that great. The suit’s fine, but the facial hair isn’t working and the scarf is pretentious.
Emma D’Arcy in Alexander McQueen
The House of the Dragon star and Best Actress in a Drama Series nominee has always been fantastic about expressing their non-binary identity through fashion with style choices that are chic, sexy, and cool as hell. We adore this look for its exuberance as well as its restraint; the way it plays with both menswear and womenswear elements and the way the makeup has a subtle punk undertone that takes the whole look in an unexpected direction. It’s modern and fabulous.
Margaret Qualley in Chanel
Like so many of the stars on this red carpet, the star of The Substance and Best Supporting Actress nominee opted for a retro-inspired glam. She’s had a relationship with Chanel for years, but we’ve rarely loved the results of this pairing. This, however, represents a personal best for her. She’s never looked so polished, so glamorous, and so beautiful on the red carpet. The naïve nature of the style would look too precious on a lot of wearers, but she’s perfectly suited to it.

The star of Disclaimer and Best Actress in a Limited Series nominee has been on a sustainable fashion kick for several years now, opting to rewear a lot of looks she was apparently allowed to keep over the years. This time, she re-wore a piece she only sported a few months ago on the Cannes Film Festival red carpet. We can’t blame her for going back to it, though. It’s a stunner and it couldn’t be more perfect for the Golden Globes, although we think the yoke looks heavy.
Demi Moore in Armani Privé
The star of The Substance and Best Actress in a Motion Picture winner showed up to give these ingenues a master class in old school glamour from an all-time purveyor of the form. She looks like a diamond in a Champagne flute and we don’t think we’ve ever paid a better compliment.
