CCTV footage has captured the horrifying moment a woman was thrown to her death from a third-floor window after falling off a treadmill.

The freak accident took place on 18 June at a busy gym in West Kalimantan, Indonesia.

Local media reported the unnamed woman, who was reportedly 22 years old, had come to the gym with her boyfriend, who was working out on a different floor.

Police said she had been using the treadmill for about 30 minutes when she stopped to wipe her face with a towel.

Unfortunately, she lost her balance and, as the treadmill kept going, she tripped backwards and tumbled out of an open window.

Footage shows her desperately trying to grab onto the frame of the third-floor window but she soon fell.

The woman was reportedly rushed to the hospital but later succumbed to her injuries. She was pronounced dead due to a bleed on her brain.

An autopsy reportedly revealed that she’d suffered extensive bruising and lacerations on her head.

Following the tragic incident, the gym was forced to close for three days.

It’s said the venue is now being investigated for alleged negligence.

Pontianak Police Commissioner Antonius Trias Kuncurojati said: “It’s very easy for someone to fall off the treadmill and then fall down.”

He also said that the treadmill and open window were only 60cm apart, while the window was just 30cm off the ground.

Police also stressed that the glass of the windows was too thin for a high-rise building.

While the windows can be left open for cleaning purposes, police said there were no warning signs nearby.

Stickers asking visitors to not open the windows were also reportedly damaged.

Police will now question witnesses and individuals suspected of leaving the windows open and the gym’s operating permit will be re-examined.

Last year, a weightlifter died after 60kg weight fell on his neck during a bench press.

Carl Hughes, 61, was found dead in his Rhos-on-Sea apartment after a neighbour decided to check on him after he didn’t collect his newspaper.

To their horror, they discovered Hughes dead underneath a 60kg metal bar.

An inquest opening heard that the veteran weightlifter was exercising alone in his apartment complex when he became trapped with the barbell wrapped around his neck.

His cause of death was asphyxia secondary to neck compression by a bar.
