Supermarkets down: Global IT outage hits Morrisons, Waitrose and Co-op as shoppers forced to use cash

Multiple supermarkets, including Morrisons, have been hit by the this morning’s global IT outage which have seen businesses left unable to process card payments.

The worldwide computer error is believed to have been caused by a faulty update to widely used cybersecurity software with the source believed to be CrowdStrike.

Some customers reported similar issues at Sainsbury’s but the supermarket has confirmed this is not related to the ongoing IT issue.

Taking to social media, customers reacted to how IT outage has impacted their ability to pay for their supermarket shop.

On X, a Morrisons customer said: “I couldn’t pay by card at Morrisons this morning at 7am, the tills just displayed an error message for me and everyone else who didn’t have cash on them.”

Another added: “No contactless payment in Morrisons this morning — cash or chip and pin only.”

In response, the supermarket’s spokesperson stated: “We are experiencing some issues with payment in some stores this morning. We are working hard with our partners to resolve this issue.”

It is believed the majority of payment issues at Morrisons stores have been resolved.

Messaging Sainsbury’s on X, a customer said: “What is happening? Why are customers holding on for over 25 minutes because our orders cannot be processed due to payment issues? Is your system down?”

Sainsbury’s explained: ” I’m sorry your payment failed and you’ve had trouble contacting us to sort this. We’re not aware of any issues at the moment.”

Speaking to GB News, a Sainsbury’s spokesperson said, “We’re not seeing any impact to our stores but continue to closely monitor the situation.”

Waitrose also appears to have been impacted by today’s worldwide outage.

A customer called out the supermarket on social media: “Crazy in Waitrose. Cash only. Not a drop of common sense amongst the staff.”

GB News has contacted Waitrose for comment.

The X account for the Heart of England Co-Op Food posted on X: “We are experiencing issues with our card payments.

“This is affecting many other retailers and we are working with our card payment provider to resolve this as soon as possible. We apologise for any inconvenience.”
