Strictly Come Dancing delivers its first bombshell of the series as Olympic swimmer Tom Dean gets the cha-cha-chop after tense dance-off – leaving loyal viewers in complete shock

Must read

Olympic swimmer Tom Dean was the first celebrity to be eliminated from Strictly Come Dancing 2024 during Sunday night’s results show.

Triple Olympic gold medallist Tom, 24, and his pro partner Nadiya Bychkova, 35, have left the competition following a tense dance off against Toyah Willcox and professional Neil Jones.

Both couples performed their routines again; Tom and Nadiya took on their Cha Cha to Boogie Wonderland by Earth, Wind & Fire then Toyah and Neil performed their Jive to Nutbush City Limits by Ike & Tina Turner.

After both couples danced a second time, the judges delivered their verdicts as Craig Revel Horwood chose to save Toyah and Neil.

Next Motsi Mabuse chose to save Toyah and Neil while Anton Du Beke chose to save Tom and Nadiya.

With two votes for Toyah and Neil, and one vote for Tom and Nadiya, head judge Shirley Ballas had the deciding vote and chose to save Toyah and Neil.

When asked by host Tess Daly about his time on the show, Tom said: ‘I’ve had the best time the last few weeks and getting to work with Nadiya has been incredible.

‘I wish I could have gone further and done more dances.

‘I’ve had the most fun and I wish we could keep going longer and longer. We’ll still go out for loads of brunches I’m sure.’

Tom’s professional dance partner Nadiya added: ‘To get to know him, he’s not just a three-time Olympic champion he’s a true gentleman and he taught me how to work really hard and how to put everything in.

‘And you know what? On this programme, sometimes to win, you don’t need to win, and that’s how I feel this year.’

Taking to X, fans struggled to understand the decision branding it ‘bizarre’ and claimed the Olympic legend had been ‘robbed’.

Writing: ‘Tom did NOT deserve to go. So gutted for him!’: ‘I’m shook why would they vote for Toyah?’: ‘Ridiculous’: ‘I don’t understand the decision at all, justice for Tom’: ‘Fumin’: ‘Why Shirley? WHY?’.

More said: ‘That Strictly Come Dancing result, ridiculous’: ‘No, no, no no… shook that Tom has gone! Wrong decision in my opinion!’: ‘What a bizarre and incorrect dance off result’: ‘Timing and clarity? How about some actual steps that are required in the dance? There was no Jive [in Toyah’s routine]. Tom was robbed’

The remaining 14 couples will take to the dancefloor next week for the Movie Week Special.

Tom and Nadiya will be joining Fleur East and Janette Manrara for their first exclusive televised interview live on Strictly: It Takes Two on Monday.

Strictly fans were left in shock after the first contestant to leave was leaked online in a huge spoiler earlier in the day.

Many were surprised at who the judges chose to save from the bottom two after the couples danced their routines for a second time.

While others expressed their annoyance at the leak which has been common most Sundays during recent series due to a notorious mole.

They said on X: ‘How can they save who they saved, seriously?!’

‘Give over… This makes me so sad.’,

‘Sorry but what that Strictly spoiler,’ followed by sad emojis.

‘Me reading the #StrictlySpoiler and finding out who was eliminated. Kinda Shocked.’

‘People who post spoilers of competitive TV shows #Strictly #StrictlyComeDancing are genuinely the worstLike why???’

Nadiya kicked off the show on Saturday night as she and Tom strutted their stuff in sequins to a disco inspired Cha Cha, only for her skin-tight sequinned jumpsuit to rip between her legs

Strictly‘s Tasha Ghouri left her father Tarek in tears as she topped the leader board and made history after scoring the highest ever for a Viennese waltz in week two on Saturday.

The Love Island star, 26, performed with pro partner Aljaž Škorjanec, 34, in what the judges branded the ‘dance of the night’.

Anton Du Beke gushed that he ‘couldn’t find anything bad’ in the performance, while Motsi Mabuse agreed: ‘That was the best dance of the night! I absolutely loved it!’.

Tasha’s father who was sat in the audience appeared visibly emotional as his daughter also struggled to choke back tears following the feedback.

When preparing to hear their scores host Claudia Winkleman said: ‘What made it more emotional was watching your dad, sobbing, watching you’.

‘I did say he was going to cry’ Tasha laughed, as the camera cut to Tarek who was wiping tears from his eyes.

‘And it’s not a gentle cry’ Claudia joked.

Following their gushing comments, Craig scored them eight out of ten, followed by Motsi, Anton and Shirley who all gave a whopping nine.

Meanwhile pro Nadiya kicked off the show as she and Tom strutted their stuff in sequins to a disco inspired Cha Cha, only for her skin-tight sequinned jumpsuit to rip between her legs.

Following the performance they faced the judges where host Tess, 55, pointed out the awkward gaffe saying: ‘Her costume! we had a costume malfunction it ripped on her leg!’.

As Nadiya giggled, judge Shirley, 64, couldn’t help but heap praise on Tom and gushed how ‘coped and carried on carried on’ during the mishap.

Elsewhere Neil Jones, 42, took a savage dig at partner Toyah Wilcox, 66, after the pair found themselves at the bottom of last week’s leaderboard with just 12 points.

After JB Fletcher’s performance saw him score a whopping 27 out of 40, partner Amy Dowden revealed she’d kept him from making mistakes, by charging him a pound every time.

Hitting back Neil quipped: ‘If we did the same with [last week’s] tango, I’d be a millionaire by now!’.

Later in the show Chris McCausland left both the audience and viewers in stitches as he made a savage dig at judge Craig

The blind comedian, 47, has so far gone down a storm with viewers thanks to his wicked humour and hilarious one-liners – and Chris was at it again and took aim at no the nonsense judge.

During the show, the acid-tongued judge dished out some fairly harsh criticism to the contestants while offering up some rather low scores.

And when host Claudia turned to Chris to chat about his upcoming foxtrot, the comic took the opportunity to stand in solidarity with his fellow dancers and take a swipe at Craig’s put-downs.

Responding to Claudia’s enquiries about his dance, Chris responded: ‘First of all, by the sound of how things are going, I think Craig is blinder than I am!’

His hilarious quip left his fellow dancers and Claudia howling with laughter, with the tickled host needing a moment to compose herself as she said: ‘Give me a minute.’

Chris’ quip also earned him a round of applause from the audience as they approved of his hilarious joke at Craig’s expense.

And viewers at home were in agreement, with many rushing to X to share their comment, with one remarking he was the ‘best thing to happen to Strictly’.
