A train was damaged when a tree fell on overhead cables on the railway line in Bishop’s Stortford as a result of Storm Bert’s high winds.
Because of multiple reports of fallen trees and branches on the tracks, operator Greater Anglia is warning people not to travel between Broxbourne and Audley End or Stansted Airport.
More than 50 services in both directions between Liverpool Street and the airport or Audley End up until 7.28pm have been cancelled.
The Stortford incident happened at about 12.35pm on the stretch of the Liverpool Street-Cambridge line that runs beside Sworder’s Field. Firefighters were at the scene and the cables were tangled around the tree.
The train involved was a London-bound service. There were no reports of any injuries among passengers.
At 2.15pm, passengers were being guided off the train to walk to Bishop’s Stortford railway station.
One person who contacted the Indie said: “All trains cancelled, at least 10 police cars and three fire engines at Sworder’s Field and outside Stortford train station – all this for a fallen tree. Don’t think so.”
Greater Anglia says: “Owing to multiple fallen trees damaging electrical overhead wires between Broxbourne and Audley End, train services between Liverpool Street and Stansted Airport, also between Stratford and Audley End, are subject to severe delays, alterations and cancellations.”
The company is trying to source rail replacement buses to cover cancelled and altered trains.
