Star Wars actor Angus MacInnes has sadly died at the age of 77, his family has confirmed.
The beloved Scottish star was best known for playin Jon ‘Dutch’ Vander in the first Star Wars film in 1977 – later subtitled A New Hope.
As Gold Leader in the rebellion, his character flies a Y-wing and commands a squadron of gifted pilots. Dutch later dies in battle during the assault on the first Death Star in the Hollywood blockbuster.
The tragic news of the actor’s passing was confirmed by his family on Monday (December 30) in a statement on a Facebook page for the star.
They said: “To all Angus’ fans around the world, with breaking hearts we write this: Angus MacInnes, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend, and actor died on 23rd of December 2024. He left us peacefully, surrounded by his family and love.
“Angus’ career spanned decades, with unforgettable roles in films such as Star Wars: A New Hope (as Gold Leader, Jon “Dutch” Vander), Witness, Judge Dredd, Captain Phillips, and many others.
“His work touched countless lives, and he took great pride in being part of these stories that continue to resonate with audiences worldwide. For Angus, the fans of Star Wars held a special place in his heart.
“He loved meeting you at conventions, hearing your stories, and sharing in your passion for the saga. He was continually humbled, delighted, and honoured by the admiration and passion of the fans and convention community.
“Angus was more than an actor—he was a kind, thoughtful, and generous soul who brought warmth and humor into the lives of everyone who knew him. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and fellow actors but also by his fans around the world – his family thank you all.”
It didn’t take long before dedicated fans flooded to the comments to share their tributes to the family online. One user penned: “It was a pleasure meeting him a few years ago. Such a nice man. May he rest peacefully.”
Another fan wrote: “So sad to hear this news. I had the pleasure of meeting Angus twice in recent years and he was a very friendly man who enjoyed chatting with the fans, I’m sure he’ll be missed and fondly remembered by his family and friends. He will always be remembered by Star Wars fans…RIP Gold Leader.” A third echoed: “Gold Leader is now one with the Force.”
Alongside his appearance in Star Wars, Angus is also credited as having role in films like Witness (1985), Atlantic City (1980), Hellboy (2004), and captain Phillis (2013). He also appeared on the small screen in TV shows such as Vikings over the course of his decorated acting career.
