Sports & Fitness

Must read

Our new, state-of-the-art sports club sits on the corner of Bristol Road and Edgbaston Park Road, and is a gateway to the University for students, staff and our local community since opening in May 2017.

The £55 million University of Birmingham Sport & Fitness Club encompasses an array of facilities, including Birmingham’s first 50m swimming pool, a large multi-sports arena, six glass-backed squash courts, a 10m climbing wall and five activity studios. The gym, which has almost 200 pieces of equipment and weights training space, has been named ‘Chrissie’s Gym’ after alumna and four-time Ironman Triathlon World Champion, Chrissie Wellington OBE, who won a public vote to be honoured in this way.

The club underlines the University of Birmingham’s commitment to sport at all levels. This pioneering new centre provides unrivalled opportunities for everyone from beginners to elite athletes, supported by a world-class team of trainers and sports experts. It is home to our many sports clubs, allowing them to train and compete at the highest level, as well as having access to the University’s Hi Performance Centre which specialises in rehabilitation from injury and illness. UBSport consistently finishes in the top three of British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) league where our sport teams compete with over 165 UK institutions.

In addition to student sports clubs, the centre caters for thousands of community and alumni members, as well as more casual pay as you go users, and community teams and groups. The Sport & Fitness club offers a wide range of programmes including a choice of up to 200 fitness and sports classes a week, and an extensive learn to swim programme for all ages. The club is an important centre for community health and well-being, and substantial effort was made during construction to ensure all facilities are as accessible as possible for those with disabilities, injuries or other specific access requirements.
