Saber Interactive’s Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 doesn’t just have fights against hordes of Tyranids. Later in the game, you also fight against the forces of Chaos, but the game’s director isn’t happy with the released state of these encounters.
While fans have complained about limited customisation, the unbalanced Assault class and speedrunners in matchmaking, the game’s creator has his own issues.
Space Marine 2 director speaks out
With the final act of Space Marine 2 focusing more on Chaos combat, many fans have complained about the game fizzling out in its ending chapters.
In an interview with GamesRadar, game director Dmitriy Grigorenko admits that they didn’t do a “good job” with the game’s Chaos combat compared to the Tyranids. While the team tried to avoid the mistakes of the game’s predecessor, they ended up falling in the exact same trap.
“That’s actually a valid criticism – I have exactly the same thoughts,” Grigorenko told the outlet. “Eventually we saw that this problem was going to happen. It’s funny, because when we started the project, and I was talking to our designers, saying, ‘Okay, so the first game is absolutely amazing when you fight Orcs, but when Chaos appears [laughing] it’s not fun anymore. Let’s not repeat their mistakes. Let’s not do this.’ And we kind of fell in the same trap. Even though we knew this was going to happen, we fell into this trap.”
Blood vs Sparkles
In the interview, Grigorenko explained that the game is less satisfying when fighting Chaos foes due to the lack of blood. While Tyranids explode into thick chunks of viscera, Chaos enemies erupt in cosmic sparkles.
“you cannot change things before it’s too late. We tried to fix this by introducing a lot of unique setpieces that break the repetitiveness, I would say, but overall, you don’t know until you make this stuff,” the game director explained.
“This may sound obvious, but it’s not very obvious when you make stuff – killing Tyranids is fun because there’s blood. You cannot fight this. I mean, no matter what you do, killing robots, killing Thousand Sons, you know, the sand, the ash, is not as good as blood. This is why killing zombies is fun, because they have blood.”
Grigorenko explained that the team now knows the pitfalls it fell into with Chaos combat in Space Marine 2. By the time Space Marine 3 comes around, or new story DLC for the current game, they know what to avoid.
“While we tried to do our best, I don’t think we did a good job in the end, but maybe next time,” Grigorenko said.
