Today is set to be the hottest day of the year so far, with the mercury expected to rise to 27C in Merseyside. After weeks of mild and often miserable days, the heat will likely come as good news for some.

But the hotter weather can also stop people from sleeping properly, leaving them uncomfortably tossing and turning in a bid to get some shuteye. Many methods can be used in desperation, including the old classic of flipping the pillow, and a lot of people will also turn to using fans.


While these can make you feel cooler, reports suggest you shouldn’t use these at night as it could be bad for your health. Experts say the breeze that you think is soothing you to sleep, is circulating all the dust and pollen in the room. Worryingly, this can cause a build-up in your sinuses and potentially trigger asthma or similar allergies.

Plus, the blast of cooler air can dry up your skin, as well as your throat, and even your eyes. It can even cause sinus irritation. Instead, the Met Office advises: “Stay out of the sun. Keep your home as cool as possible – shading windows and shutting them during the day may help.

“Open them when it is cooler at night. Keep drinking fluids. If there’s anybody you know, for example, an older person living on their own, who might be at special risk, make sure they know what to do.”
