Train users will be able to use contactless payment methods to tap-in and tap-out at multiple stations in Kent from next month.
The “simpler, more flexible” way of travelling, which will serve as an alternative to buying a traditional ticket, is being introduced at 53 stations across the south east, including six in the Sevenoaks area.
From September 22, those travelling in both directions between London and Bat and Ball, Dunton Green, Eynsford, Otford, Sevenoaks and Shoreham will be able to tap their phone or contactless bank card.
This means they will no longer need to queue to use a ticket machine or ticket office.
Southeastern says the ticketing technology, which is already widely used in London, will “ensure customers get the best price on the day”.
Southeastern’s commercial director Alicia Andrews said: “We are building a better, more reliable and sustainable railway and the government-led expansion of Pay as You Go ticketing makes travelling by rail simpler and more convenient.
“The ability to simply tap in and out has been widely available in London for many years and customers have found it easy to use and appreciate the simplicity of the fares and the convenience of the daily and weekly caps.”
