Six budding Plymouth designers join The Devil Wears Prada

Must read

Elton John’s production of The Devil Wears Prada has announced the budding Plymouth fashion designers who will be part of the play. Following a call out to local fashion designers to submit looks they believe would get two nods from the formidable Miranda Priestly, six local fashion designers have been selected.

Theatre Royal Plymouth (TRP), The Devil Wears Prada: A New Musical and course leaders from Arts University Plymouth’s BA (Hons) Costume Production and BA (Hons) Fashion Design degrees have revealed the winning designs. Unveiled by The Devil Wears Prada: A New Musical director and choreographer, Jerry Mitchell, and Amy Di Bartolomeo, playing the role of Miranda’s fiery first assistant, Emily, the fashion and costume designers, specifically from the South West, will be showcasing their creations within the theatre’s foyer during the run of the brand-new show, opening this week, from July 6 – August 17.

Winning entries came from Madi Redfearn, Mia Cooper, Kiki Fraikue, Steph Earl and Kim Watkins, who are all students from Arts University Plymouth, whilst the other displayed outfit has come from Identity Fashion in Royal William Yard.

Professor Stephen Felmingham, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic) at Arts University Plymouth, said: “Given the wealth of exciting fashion and costume design that comes out of the South West, I’m thrilled to see that five students from Arts University Plymouth were chosen from an open submission call to be shown alongside the launch of Theatre Royal Plymouth’s brilliant new production of The Devil Wears Prada: A New Musical. These students represent the breadth of fashion and costume design education that we offer, from our Pre-Degree Extended Diploma in Fashion & Textiles to our undergraduate courses in Costume and Fashion Design, and it is a great opportunity for our students to showcase their talents directly to theatre audiences .”

With The Devil Wears Prada: A New Musical starting its exclusive run this weekend, not only will the designs be the talk of the town, but TRP has also invited the winners to attend a special gala night performance on Thursday, July 25.
