Sinead O’Connor’s exact cause of death has been revealed a year after her sudden death.

The popular Irish singer died last July at the age of 56 after she was found “unresponsive” in her London flat.

It’s now been concluded the Nothing Compare 2 U hit-maker, who had struggled with her health for years, died from “exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and bronchial asthma together with low-grade lower respiratory tract infection,” the Irish Independent reports.

While it was confirmed earlier this year she had died of natural causes, the details of the death have now been published, with reports suggesting O’Connor’s first husband and friend, John Reynolds, registered the death certificate last week.

According to reports, the document noted she had died of a combination of the conditions. Her death came following a three-decade career, with the singer ushered into the spotlight following her 1990 cover of Prince’s Nothing Compares 2 U.

At the time of her death last year, her family released a statement which read: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad.

“Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.”

O’Connor is understood to have suffered a years-long mental health battle on top of her physical health woes, with her own death coming just over a year after the tragic death of her son, Shane.

In January 2022, Irish police said they’d recovered a body in Wicklow following an appeal for the missing teenager, 17.

It is believed he had taken his own life while on suicide watch. An unverified X account which was believed to have been O’Connor’s shared an emotional tribute at the time.

The post read: “My beautiful son, Nevi’im Nesta Ali Shane O’Connor, the very light of my life, decided to end his earthly struggle today and is now with God.

“May he rest in peace and may no one follow his example. My baby. I love you so much. Please be at peace.”

Soon after, the singer revealed she had been admitted to hospital and that she had felt responsible for her son’s death, writing: “Death is no ones fault but mine”.

Hours later, she updated fans to say she was escorted to a hospital by police when she added: “I am with cops now on way to hospital. I’m sorry I upset everyone.”

Back in January, after it was confirmed O’Connor had died of natural causes, a spokesperson for Southwark Coroners Court said: “This is to confirm that Ms O’Connor died of natural causes.

“The coroner has therefore ceased their involvement in her death,” they told the Daily Mail.
