Sick crowd chants at Man United loanee Mason Greenwood causes game to be stopped

Must read

La Liga referee Jorge Figueroa Vazquez temporarily halted Getafe’s 1-0 defeat to Deportivo Alaves on Saturday night following crowd chants aimed at Manchester United loanee Mason Greenwood.

With Greenwood’s team behind in the 18th minute of the game, the official paused the match after chants of: ‘Die Greenwood, die,’ could be heard from the home supporters. After the halt in proceedings, an announcement was made over the tannoy system asking for supporters to cease their chants which was adhered to.

It is unclear at this stage whether Getafe will be opting to make an official complaint to La Liga. Greenwood has been on loan in Spain since deadline day in August.

He was suspended by United in January 2022 amid allegations of attempted rape, assault and controlling and coercive behaviour. A lengthy investigation into the case then followed, with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) dropping all charges against Greenwood in February 2023.

A United statement at the time read: “Manchester United notes the decision of the Crown Prosecution Service that all charges against Mason Greenwood have been dropped. The club will now conduct its own process before determining next steps. We will not make any further comment until that process is complete.”

The forward’s current contract at Old Trafford is due to expire in 2025 however MEN Sport understands the working assumption is that Greenwood will be sold in the summer. During his stint at Getafe, the 22-year-old has racked up ten goals and six assists in all competitions.

Getafe are thought to be keen to keep Greenwood permanently but do not have the financial power to afford his wages. Napoli are one of the clubs also thought to be looking at the winger.
