Shopping centre ‘closed after travellers descend on site’

A shopping centre in Colne was reported to have closed for a short period yesterday (June 25).

Several people on social media complained that the Boundary Outlet closed at around 7pm.

According to police, travellers were reported to have attended the shopping centre. Officers said they “moved on peacefully” after a short time.

The Boundary Outlet declined to provide further comment.

When asked why the site was closed, a police spokesperson said: “Travellers were reported to have attended. They moved off peacefully after a short time.”

In May, a temporary stop notice has been served to a landowner after a council was alerted to an ‘illegal encampment’ in Darwen.

The council said it had been made aware of an ‘unauthorised encampment’ on private land south of Whitehall Park. The location was said to be a farm off, Bolton Road.

In March, caravans and vans arrived at one of the car parks of Nuttall Park, in Ramsbottom.

The council issued a notice for the group to leave.
