“She Commands An Entire Generation”: Ib Kamara On Transforming Kylie Jenner Into A British Vogue Cover Girl

This shoot marks Kamara’s first September issue for British Vogue and Jenner’s cover debut. But despite having never previously met, in a sense their ties run deep. In 2022, Kamara was appointed art director of Off-White, six months after the late Virgil Abloh tragically passed. (He was arguably the first designer to have welcomed Jenner into fashion, and she later wore a wedding dress of his making at the 2022 Met Gala.) I wonder, then, what Kamara thinks Abloh might have spotted before others? “She commands an entire generation, and she is, to be honest, pop culture,” he says. “But on the flip-side, she’s also a human. I felt safe within her orbit because she’s confident and secure in who she is.” He says the veil dropped when Jenner’s young children – Stormi, six, and Aire, two – arrived on set with their grandmother, Kris. “It was the most beautiful moment to see. All the kisses, the embraces, and love. Kylie became even more animated, trying to make her kids giggle and smile for the camera. It was so touching to see Kylie let us into their own little universe. It made her feel real.” And Kris? What was she like? “Oh,” Kamara says, with an emphatic switch in tone. “Just so, so fab.”
