After paying a whopping £543 for a ‘disgraceful’ stay at the Jeffrey Street hotel, the visitor was faced with a ‘hideously loud’ clattering from workmen at 7am each morning.

Bosses rushed to respond to the dissatisfied guest, ‘sincerely’ apologising for the disruption caused.

The one-star rating entitled ‘Hell!’ reads: “I can’t believe I paid £543.60 (excluding breakfast) to stay in a room next to a building site that started drilling, hammering and banging and of course shouting from 7am each morning.

“I also think it’s disgraceful that the staff didn’t mention that my second floor room right next to the works would be hideously loud come early morning. For > £500 I’d expect some courtesy.

“Fortunately my annoyance is mitigated by this being a business trip and the money spent not my personal cash. BUT if I’d been here on holiday as many in the hotel were I’d have been banging on the manager’s door.”

With over 6000 reviews on Tripadvisor, the Leonardo Royal Hotel Edinburgh averaged a ‘very good’ three-and-a-half star rating.

But other poor reviews mention the disruption caused by the building works.

Another unhappy guest said they ‘felt robbed’ by their £250 one night stay.

They wrote: “Not value for money ! Noise levels from building site made it untenable. Windows looked straight on to building site 10 feet away windows were filthy too.”

Though bosses were quick to apologise to comments online, the reviews stated that “they were not remotely interested” with the customers’ complaints.

The Leonardo’s customer service teams response reads: “We sincerely apologise for the disruption caused by the nearby construction work during your visit.

“We understand how frustrating it can be to be disturbed early in the morning, especially when you’re looking forward to a restful stay.”

They added: “Rest assured, we are reviewing our procedures to prevent similar situations from occurring in the future.”

The Leonardo Royal Hotel Edinburgh was approached for comment.
