Scotland vs Hungary – LIVE updates

Must read

Another glorious failure as a must win game looked nothing of the sort for the majority of the 100 minutes played in Stuttgart.

Scotland needed all three points. They got none as Hungary snatched the latest of winners through Kevin Csoboth.

That it took Steve Clarke‘s team well into the second half to register a shot on goal told the story.

Angus Gunn was needed to keep the Scots in it in the final stages, saving from Szoboszlai before Csoboth hit the post.

The best chance for Scotland fell to Grant Hanley, and in truth it was comfortable save for Gulacsi.

There was a massive shout for Stuart Armstrong to have been awarded a penalty in the second half, but hard luck stories won’t carry much weight with the Tartan Army after what was for the most part a cautious, passive display when the exact opposite was required.

Rather than becoming history makers, Scotland finish bottom of the group with one point and it’s hard to make the argument that lessons have been learned from a similarly depressing Euro 2020 outcome.

The inquest will now take place and the results won’t make for pretty reading – follow all the reaction here LIVE!

Why Stuart Armstrong was denied Scotland penalty

Former Celtic hero Chris Sutton has emerged as the lone dissenter in Scotland’s penalty fury after being sent crashing out of Euro 2024 by Hungary.

Steve Clarke and his players claimed for a late penalty in the do or die Group A clash when substitute Stuart Armstrong was bundled over in the box by defender Will Orban. Despite the claims from the Tartan Army in Stuttgart, referee Facundo Tello waved away the shouts – with the VAR team also opting against sending the man in the middle to the monitor to review the flashpoint.

Clarke fumes at Scotland penalty denial

Steve Clarke

Raging Steve Clarke has demanded an explanation as to why Scotland were denied a penalty during their heartbreaking defeat to Hungary.

A 100th minute goal from Kevin Csoboth broke Tartan Army hearts in Stuttgart as yet again, the Scots were sent home from the Euro 2024 party at the culmination of the group stage as the Hungarians wait to see if their three point haul will be enough for them to sneak through from Group A as one of the third placed sides.

After Scotland huffed and puffed for the majority of the game without looking like scoring, they did look brighter after the introduction of Armstrong and Lawrence Shankland.

The abundance of extra-time was a result of a worryingly serious looking injury to Hungary striker Barnabas Varga, who had to be stretchered off with captain Dominik Szoboszlai in tears. But it looked like the Scots should have had the chance to score from the spot when Willi Orban appeared to clatter through the back of Armstrong in the box

What the pundits said

James McFadden and Kris Boyd(Image: SNS)

Kris Boyd hopes Steve Clarke shrugs off the Euro 2024 disappointment to lead Scotland to the Nations League and the next World Cup campaign – as James McFadden was left wondering over the approach to the do or die Hungary clash.

Scotland were caught with a 100th minute sucker punch in Stuttgart as Kevin Csoboth netted for the Magyars as Clarke’s men finished bottom of Group A and now heading home from Germany.

For the third tournament in succession, Scotland have lost their opening game, drawn their second and lost their third to finish with a solitary point.

The penalty inquest ramps up

Raging Alan Shearer admits he was baffled why referee Facundo Tello was not sent to the monitor by VAR – insisting Scotland were denied a “clear” penalty.

Tartan Army heartbreak

What now for Clarke?

Steve Clarke has remained in the dressing room in deep discussion with his players and it must be a devastating place.

But what next for Clarke? In the end, the Tartan Army got plenty of plaudits for their performance but the brutal reality is that one point from a possible nine is nowhere near good enough and it’s yet another group stage exit to add to the rest at major tournaments.

The SFA handed Clarke a contract through to the World Cup in 2026 but will he consider his future now having failed to reach the knockout stage? Will Hampden chiefs have second thoughts on whether he is the man to lead them? What will the fans’ opinion be when the dust settles.

Scotland finished rock bottom and in truth were disappointing on a night when they had to throw everything at it.

Full-time

The same old story for Scotland and there will be questions to answer for the manager after this,

A must win game and it took until the final stages to even look like scoring.

Hungary were unfortunate to not have had it won before the final kick.

But by that stage it made little difference had Scotland lost or drawn.

That just puts the tin lid on what has been a massively disappointing Euro 2024 campaign.

GOAl!

A cruel, painful scuker punch at the death.

We can’t keep a corner alive and a swift break cuts Scotland wide open.

And Csoboth is on hand at the back post to slide it home and keep Hungary’s slim hopes alive.

Scotland are out though and they can have little complaints.

Chance!

That was it.

The cutback finds Grant Hanley of all people.

He gets a cood connection but Gulasci gets across well and it’s at a good height for the Hungary keeper to palm away.

Offside

We all thought that was the chance as McTominay stretches and puts it over.

But there’s at least one offside and the flag goes up.

This is agonising…

Germany level

Niclas Fullkrug has grabbed an injury time leveller for Germany so the hosts will now go through as group winners.

And again

It’s Gunn to the rescue once more.

Szoboszlai smashes towards the near post from close range and the Norwich keeper stands tall again.

He can only hope and pray though as Csoboth fires across him and it comes back off the post.

Scotlansd so lucky to still be standing here.

Saved

It’s Hungary looking the more dangrous.

Shafer drives forward and fires towards the near post and Gunn saves well.

This is all at thw wrong end of the park for Scotland though.

However, there are ten minutes of added time to play and the tartan Army roar for one last push.

Sub

Another Scotland change.

The skipper Andy Robertson makes way for Lewis Morgan.

Double sub

For Scotland.

Gilmour and Ralston come off for Kenny McLean and Ryan Christie.

Finally we seem to be going for it but has taken far too long.

Penalty?!

Scotland are screaming on one from the Argentinian ref.

Armstrong gets in behind and looks to have been bundled over, but the ref says no.

The Scotland players are adamant but we play on.

Living dangerously

Szoboszlai dances through and chips a ball up that hendry has to read and heads clear.

Now Scotland make a double change.

McGinn and Adams off, Shankland and Armstrong on.

Check over

No penalty and to be fair, there didn’t look like a while.

Varga landed horribly though and he’s been replaced by the big man, Adam.

Dardai also makes way for Szalai.

Not good

This is a worrying situation.

Varga has been down receiving treatment for a while and more medical staff are coming on to the pitch with another stretcher.

He’s now beng stretchered away to a round of applause from the whole stadium.

Meanwhile, the potential penalty check is ongoing…

Penalty check

Whole this goes on, there’s a check for a Hungary penalty…

Worrying

Angus Gunn of Scotland collides with Barnabas Varga of Hungary resulting in Varga requiring serious medical treatment(Image: Getty Images)

Varga looks to have come off the worst of that.

His teammates are shielding him from view as the medics get to work on him, having been urgently screaming urgently to get the stretcher on.

Hopefully he’s okay but that didn;t look good for the Hungary front man as the strecther comes on.

Free kick Hungary

Still giving away too many of these.

This time Hanley bundles into the back of Sallai and Szoboszlai’s delivery casues some panic and Gunn clatters Ralston.

Both down and needing treatment.

Over

More ropey defending from a corner.

The delivery goes all the way to the back post to Nagy.

He whips it in and Dardai connects, but thankfully sends his header over.

Sub

First one comes for Hungary.

Callum Styles makes way for Adam Nagy.

Dykes the man behind the mic

John McGinn of Scotland controls the ball whilst under pressure from Marton Dardai of Hungary(Image: Getty Images)

Lyndon Dykes is high up in the Stuttgart Arena but Steve Clarke could have done with him out on the pitch. We need to offer more up front.

John McGinn, though, is just starting to get into this game a little bit more. Could he be the one to settle this?

We’ve got McGinn

Much more like it from the meatbaw felly!

He powers past three men down the right but his cutback is intercepted and cleared for a throw.

Need much more of that and a better final ball though.

Over

A shot, at least.

Robertson loses the ball but then recovers really well and drives forward.

Adams drifts infield on to his right foot but his effort is far too high.

Not acceptable that it took so long, but at least an encouraging sign.

Booking

McTominay sees yellow and that’s a costly one.

If we do get get through, he’ll be suspended for the last 16 game.

That’s a blow, and there really wasn;t much in that.

Can’t worry about that just now though, there’s work to do and we need to start doing it better.

McTominay will miss last 16 tie

This game has slowly swung the way of Hungary. How long does Steve Clarke give it before making a change? It’s Marco Rossi’s men who have started the brighter of the two in the second half.

But IF Scotland do make it through to the last-16 then Scott McTominay won’t feature as he picks up a booking.

Saved

Sallai turns in the box and shoots.

Luckily his strike takes a touch off Raslton which takes all the sting out of it and Gunn can gather easily.

That’s now 5 halves of football this tournament where Scotland haven’t registered a shot. That’s damning.

RESTART!

Back out and Scotland get the second 45 underway.

No changes, but calls for them won’t take too long if things continue in the same vein.

Need more intent and to at least look like scoring here.

C’MON SCOTLAND!

Not so Sweet Caroline

England’s unofficial anthem gets an airing over the PA (Tannoy is the brand name) and gets the repsonse you;d expect from the Tartan Army.

About the only thing they;ve had to get excited about in all honesty.

Keith Jackson’s first-half thoughts

Scotland’s head coach Steve Clarke(Image: AFP via Getty Images)

It all felt horribly precarious as Scotland headed inside at 0-0, having failed to register a meaningful effort on goal in a game that had to be won.

Even more so, given that Orban had smashed a header off Gunn’s crossbar in the dying minutes as Hungarian momentum was building and Scotland’s self-belief was just beginning to wobble ever so slightly.

It all felt as if the second half was about to become a test of endurance.

Half-time

That’s the first 45 up and on this evidence, we won’t be making history unless there’s a big improvement.

Enough of the ball but we’ve done preciouos little with it.

Hungary have easily had the better chances and look dangrous on the break.

The Tartan Army need something to lift them from the players here as it’s been far too passive.

Here’s hoping there’s more intent after the break.

Over

Szoboszlai with an effort from about 25 yards but it’s always rising.

Came from McTominay trying to win a free-kick on the left and didn’t get it.

Gunn wasn’t too impressed with attempts to shut down the break but thankfully not much damage done.

Big second 45 minutes coming up

Comfortable enough 45 minutes for Scotland but they haven’t had any serious attempts at goals. It’s Hungary who have come closest to scoring, forcing Angus Gunn into a save and hitting the crossbar. Both teams need to go for it after the break.

Added time

Just the one minute, which is perhaps a small mercy. This has not been a great watch.

Booking

Scotland’s Jack Hendry looks at his torso for cuts after a foul (Image: SNS Group / SFA)

Hungary collecting them.

This time it’s Andras Shafer, who appears to go in studs up on Hendry.

It’s just a yellow but that looked a nasty one and Ryan Porteous will have watched that with some interest.

Magyars trio booked

The cards are totting up for Hungary now. That’s three players walking a tightrope.

Clever from Hungary

That free kick was so well worked from Hungary. They caught everyone out, expecting Dominik Szoboszlai to go for goal from the free-kick but he floated it to the back post and Willi Orban’s header shaved the woodwork, albeit it he looked offside.

Huge chance for Hungary

Szoboszlai is wondering how he doesn’t have an assist there.

The Liverpool star clips a ball to the back post and Scotland completely switch off.

Orban is all alone and meets the ball firmly, but heads over when he should score.

An offside check may have come to our rescue, but that’s a huge let off nonetheless.

Adams again

This time the striker tries to hook the ball clear with an overhead.

But Varga goes to header it and throws himself down holding his face.

Theres no contact at all but a free-kick it is in a dangerous poition…

Over

Hungary getting on the ball more and causing some problems.

Sallai lets fly from distance but thankfully his effort is high, wide and handome.

A few worrying signs though when Hungary increase the tempo.

We’ve had to do a bit of defending and we haven’t really created anything clear cut.

Over

Szoboszlai fancies it and tries his luck.

It comes flush off a head in the Scotland wall and out for another corner, which Hanley heads clear before Gunn can claim and McTominay blooters deep into Magyar territory.

Free-kick

In a dangerous position for Hungary.

Adams is too eager to win the ball back from Styles and he clumsily bundles him over and this one is in range…

Swiss strike first

The chances of Scotland finishing second just became a little bit more difficult with Switzerland taking a shock lead against the hosts in Frankfurt. Bologna’s Dan Ndoye with the opening goal there and as it stands they would go through as group winners.

Another yellow

John McGinn of Scotland is fouled by Callum Styles of Hungary(Image: Getty Images)

Another caution for the Magyars, who aren’t frightened of leaving the foot in.

Obran clatters McGinn at pace and there’s another chance to get the ball into the box, but it’s dealt with easily eno0ugh by the Hungarians.

Bit of a waste

McGinn does well to win a free-kick out on the right, using that big bum of his.

Robertson tries to whip in an inswinger but it doesn’t get past the near post.

If these don’t improve then Austin MacPhee might be in for an earful from the boss again.

More urgency needed

Scotland Head Coach Steve Clarke(Image: SNS Group)

Twenty minutes on the clock and plenty of possession for Scotland but they haven’t tested RB Leipzig’s Peter Gulacsi. Needs to be a bit more urgency. Hungary’s approach is surprising.

Germany goal ruled out

Germany thought they had taken an early lead against the Swiss there through Bayer Leverkusen’s Robert Andrich but it was ruled out after a VAR review following a foul by Jamal Musiala in the build up.
